Sunday's scrimmage gave Norvell another look at how Ashton Daniels operates when things don't go smoothly, and the response is what stuck with him most.
🔄 Answering Adversity
FSU's offense stalled on its first few drives as the defense "won the day" up front, but Daniels led multiple touchdown drives once the offense settled in. "You continue to stay the course, you continue to focus on the next play," Norvell said of the response.
🗣️ Ownership Remains the Theme
"Just his ownership of the offense. Understanding where to go, the things to do, how he's been able to perform. I think he's done a really good job," Norvell said, adding that Daniels has been "highly efficient and explosive" in what's been asked of him.
Why It Matters: Norvell has repeated variations of this same praise all camp, but the willingness to highlight resilience after a rocky start, not just clean execution, is a meaningfully different data point about how Daniels will handle adversity in real games. 🍢
With both scrimmages complete, Norvell laid out exactly which battles he's watching closely this week as the Seminoles start finalizing their depth chart.
🛡️ Up Front
"Just the emergence of the five up front on the offensive line," Norvell said, noting the group has been consistent but that FSU wants eight or nine linemen capable of playing at a high level, not just five.
🔒 In the Secondary
"I think it's very competitive right now," Norvell said of cornerback opposite Ja'Bril Rawls, praising Quindarrius Jones' steady play while noting Charles Lester III's interception in the scrimmage and Nehemiah Chandler and Ricky Knight both in the mix. He called safety "a fun group to see battle" with Ashlynd Barker "playing at an elite level."
Why It Matters: With starters like Daniels, Duce Robinson, Rawls, and Barker locked in, these remaining battles, particularly the offensive line depth and CB2, will determine how deep and reliable FSU's rotation actually is once the games start counting. 🍢
FSU is 10 practices into an 18-practice camp, and Norvell says the roster has largely avoided anything serious despite a physical few weeks.
📈 Mostly Clean, With a Few Names to Watch
"We've been pretty clean just on the bumps and bruises," Norvell said. Running back Tre Wisner has missed both scrimmages with a minor issue, and true freshman linebacker Izayia Williams sat out scrimmage 2 after a strong showing in the first, with Norvell expecting him back "in the next week or so."
🔄 The LB Room Still Sorting Itself Out
With Williams and UNC transfer Mikai Gbayor both working back from injury, Blake Nichelson, Omar Graham Jr., and Caleb LaVallee have all gotten extra opportunities next to Chris Jones. Whether a true freshman can beat out a veteran transfer for real snaps is still an open question heading into the final stretch of camp.
Why It Matters: A clean camp injury report is exactly what FSU needed given how much youth and new pieces are on this roster. But the timing of Williams' and Gbayor's absences means the linebacker competition, one of the defense's most important position battles, still doesn't have a clear answer. 🍢
Before Chris Jones ever set foot on FSU's practice field, he spent three days in Houston working out with former Texas A&M and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Donnie Baggs, who trains some of the top linebackers in the country.
💪 The Work Ethic That Stood Out
"We trained three days in a row... Chris was the complete opposite [of guys who coast]. He was dedicated," Baggs said. "I had to kind of rein him back a little bit... you know his mindset, he's hungry."
🏆 A Bold Comparison
Baggs, who has also worked with Miami's Wesley Bissainthe and SMU's Alexander Kilgore, didn't hold back: "With his skillset and everything he's done in the past, he can easily be one of the top guys in the conference."
Why It Matters: Outside praise from someone who trains ACC-caliber linebackers for a living carries real weight. It backs up everything FSU's own coaches have said about Jones since he arrived. 🍢

Danzy jumped from No. 68 a year ago behind blazing speed that shows up on the field, not just at combines. "He hits 23 mph on Catapult... in football situations, not speed work," Feldman wrote, noting Danzy has added 15 pounds since 2024 without losing a step, while also owning the ACC and FSU record in the 400-meter.
💯 Mandrell Desir: No. 57
Desir's freshman season, 30 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, and 6.5 sacks, put him in rare company. "Only Noles legend Ron Simmons and future first-rounder Brian Burns had more sacks as true freshmen," Feldman wrote, adding Desir bench pressed 405 pounds and squatted 515 this offseason.
Why It Matters: National recognition like this from a credible outside evaluator backs up what FSU's coaches have said about both players all camp, and signals real NFL buzz building around two of the program's most explosive athletes. 🍢
Florida State is replacing Doak Campbell Stadium's grass field this week, less than a year after the last replacement, in preparation for the Aug. 29 season opener.
🌾 Sod on Plastic
FSU is installing NorthBridge Bermudagrass using a "sod on plastic" process, the same method used at this year's World Cup, which produces dense two-inch-thick roots that can handle play almost immediately after installation.
⏰ More Lead Time Than Last Year
Last year's field went in just 11 days before kickoff. This time, FSU has nearly three weeks of lead time, work the grounds crew compared to Super Bowl-level turnaround timelines.
Why It Matters: Grounds crews say the current surface is healthy but doesn't have the root strength football needs. A fresh, properly cured field is a small but real factor in player safety and performance heading into a physical season. 🍢

💪 Why the Timing Doesn't Matter Much
Jennings enters his third year as Rhett Lashlee's starter, giving him a level of system familiarity that limited practice reps likely won't erode before the Sept. 7 opener. FSU, by contrast, is breaking in Ashton Daniels in a brand-new offense, making every one of the Seminoles' own camp reps far more valuable.
📅 Why This Game Matters So Much
FSU's brutal October stretch, at Louisville on short rest, at Miami, then Clemson at home, means a Week 1 loss to SMU could put the Seminoles in serious danger of missing a bowl for a third straight year.
Why It Matters: FSU needs every advantage it can find in a game this consequential. An opposing QB's minor injury just isn't the kind of edge that changes the outcome. 🍢
Eric Luallen, the longtime radio voice of FSU baseball and a former Seminoles offensive lineman, has been named the new public address announcer at Doak Campbell Stadium.
⚾ A Career Full Circle
Luallen played for Bobby Bowden from 1986-89, part of the run that began FSU's NCAA-record streak of 14 straight top-5 finishes. He's called 984 FSU baseball games since 2007, including six College World Series trips.
Why It Matters: "Almost 40 years to the day after I reported for my first practice under Coach Bowden," as Luallen put it, this is about as full-circle a story as FSU athletics gets. 🍢
📝 Recruiting Notebook 📝
Texas' No. 25 quarterback nationally, Wright threw for over 4,000 yards as a sophomore and recently added offers from FSU, Clemson, Colorado, and USC to a fast-growing recruitment he says he's keeping wide open.
The Tallahassee native, whose older brother Makari was heavily recruited by FSU before landing at Colorado, will see the Seminoles twice this fall, against Miami on Oct. 17 and Florida on Nov. 27.
The fast-rising Mississippi prospect, who's picked up offers from Miami, Ole Miss, Alabama, and LSU in just weeks, will visit Tallahassee for the Oct. 31 Clemson game as part of an 11-stop fall tour.
Why It Matters: Three prospects, three different classes, all with FSU squarely in the mix heading into the fall visit season, a sign the coaching staff's recruiting pipeline is staying active on multiple fronts at once. 🍢
