FSU put on shoulder pads for the first time Friday, and Mike Norvell came away with plenty to talk about after a practice he described as competitive with "some heightened emotions."
💪 The Defensive Front Held Up
Norvell said the defensive line's lighter build didn't stop it from controlling the point of attack: "Some guys might not weigh 300 pounds, but they're strong and they hold the point. They can knock people back." He credited the group's get-off more than any scheme wrinkle.
The second level impressed too, with Norvell pointing to linebackers and safeties fitting the box and showing real speed in the run game.
🎯 Jasen Lopez Stood Out
True freshman receiver Jasen Lopez had what Norvell called three big plays on the day, including a toe-tap sideline grab that made the rounds on social media. It's the latest sign of sustained praise for Lopez, who Norvell has now highlighted in multiple pressers since fall camp opened.
🔒 Rawls and Jones Finally Healthy
With cornerbacks Ja'Bril Rawls and Quindarrius Jones both fully available for the first time in a year, Norvell said the one-on-one battles between them and Duce Robinson have been must-watch: "That's two of the best in college football competing."
He also singled out the tight end room as a group he's excited about, pointing to their speed and competitive fight through the first three practices.

Williams' path to Tallahassee included five different schools: an initial commitment to Louisville, a flip to Syracuse, a pledge to FSU that fell through, a stop at Florida, a flip to Ole Miss, and finally a return to the Seminoles for good. He signed as FSU's highest-rated linebacker of the Norvell era.
💥 The Rep That Mattered
"He got me fired up in the first tackle circuit we do," Norvell said. "His very first rep. Speed, explosive, violent. I was jumping on him, draped all over him." Norvell specifically praised the lack of hesitation, often the hardest thing for a player to shake after a major knee injury.

Redshirt senior Daniel Lyons has been at FSU through the highs and lows of the Norvell era, and heading into his second year in Tony White's scheme, he's not shy about what he expects from himself.

Asked what he wants to prove this season, Lyons didn't hesitate: "That I'm that. I'm really like that... Relentless. Everything. I'm just that player. I'm that guy."
Norvell named Lyons as one of the first players who stood out for offseason growth, calling him a leader who has "a chance to really be impactful."
📊 The Track Record
Lyons started all 12 games last season, recording 26 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble, including two tackles and a sack in the upset of Alabama.

Tight end Desirrio Riles has quickly built chemistry with new quarterback Ashton Daniels through the spring and summer, and he's not shy about praising his new signal-caller.
🗣️ The Praise
"Ash is great, man. He gets me the ball right when it needs to be there," Riles said. "He's just being a leader out there."
Riles also detailed his daily battles against Ashlynd Barker and K.J. Kirkland in practice, calling the competition a two-way sharpening process: "Iron sharpens iron, so we just go at it every day."

Illinois State transfer CJ Richard Jr. was the FCS' most efficient tackler last season, missing just 1.9% of his attempts, and helped lead his team to the FCS title game. He now steps into the boundary safety role Barker vacated.
🔁 Is This the Interchangeable Secondary White Wants?
White's system asks his three safeties to be nearly interchangeable across rover, boundary, and field roles. Execution lagged behind the scheme's design last season, and Year 2 is about closing that gap.
Why It Matters: This room has the talent to be one of FSU's best position groups, but White's defense only works if the whole unit understands each other's jobs. How quickly that chemistry builds will shape the defense's ceiling. 🍢

FSU's athletic department GPA broke its own record twice in one academic year, finishing at a department-record 3.385 cumulative GPA after the spring semester. The department also posted a school-record 993 score in the NCAA's multi-year Academic Progress Rate report.

ESPN's FPI gives Miami a 50.3% chance to win the ACC, with FSU checking in fifth at just 4.2%, behind Clemson, SMU, and Louisville.
