The Big Ten and SEC dropped their opposition to the Protect College Sports Act Friday night, and while most coverage has focused on NIL and eligibility, the bill's conference realignment provisions could gut FSU's 2030 ACC exit strategy.
🚪 The Two Provisions That Matter
The bill caps power conference membership at 19 schools. The Big Ten currently sits at 18, and virtually everyone in college athletics assumes that final seat is reserved for Notre Dame, effectively removing the Big Ten as a realistic destination for FSU.
Any program moving between power conferences would have to operate as an independent for five years first, a requirement that doesn't apply to programs already independent like Notre Dame. FSU has none of Notre Dame's built-in independence infrastructure, meaning that stretch would mean no conference check, no natural home for non-football sports, and a media contract negotiated with the world knowing FSU has nowhere else to go.
📉 What It Means in Practice
FSU's 2030 exit was timed to coincide with the Big Ten's next media negotiation window, when new members can negotiate full revenue shares rather than the discounted terms Oregon and Washington accepted. These provisions would turn FSU into an SEC-or-bust applicant with no leverage.
Why It Matters: The bill hasn't passed either chamber of Congress and could still change. But if these provisions survive, FSU's two years and millions of dollars spent securing an ACC exit could buy little more than a head start on simply waiting out the Grant of Rights in 2036. 🍢
