How do you feel about Gus Malzahn potentially returning in 2026? |
🏹 Welcome to The Chief Brief! 🏹
Happy Stress-free Saturday, Seminole!
A lot is moving at once in Tallahassee: on the court, on the field, and behind the scenes. Today’s edition hits six distinct pressure points shaping FSU’s present and near future.
🏀 A Historic Moment for Seminole Heritage 🏀
FSU men’s basketball takes center stage as Xavier Osceola becomes the first member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida to suit up for the program, with a Seminole Heritage Game spotlighting the university’s deeper ties.
🏈 A Future Nonconference Clash Gets Complicated 🏈
FSU and Georgia’s long-planned home-and-home may be headed for a neutral site, altering the stakes — and leverage — of one of the Seminoles’ biggest future matchups.
🧠 Staffing Wins, Misses, and Late Twists 🧠
From Brandon Harris flipping to Florida to lingering questions about coordinator continuity, FSU’s coaching picture remains uneven as momentum builds elsewhere in the league.
📉 Portal Movement Starts at the Margins 📉
Camdon Frier departs, and a broader look at ten portal exits shows where FSU is trimming depth — and where losses actually matter.
🔁 Sorting Signal from Noise in the Portal 🔁
Most early departures reflect evaluation corrections, not a roster exodus — with one notable exception that raises real concerns in the secondary.
❓ The Biggest Question Still Has No Answer ❓
With the portal clock ticking, Florida State still hasn’t clarified who will run the offense in 2026 or how it plans to land the quarterback this rebuild hinges on.
🔥 Why This Edition Matters 🔥
We could all use some alignment and some communication from leadership... Coaching clarity, portal execution, and identity all collide in the next few weeks. How FSU handles this stretch will define whether 2026 begins with direction… or more uncertainty.

🏀 Xavier Osceola Makes History as First Seminole Tribe Member on FSU Men’s Basketball 🏀
Florida State freshman Xavier Osceola is preparing for a milestone moment that goes far beyond basketball; representing both FSU and the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
🔥 A Historic First for FSU Basketball
Osceola is the first men’s basketball player in program history who is a member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
Joined head coach Luke Loucks’ first FSU team in Summer 2025.
Will take the bench this season on a medical redshirt, but remains fully integrated with the program.
⏰ Game Details: Seminole Heritage Game
Opponent: UMass
Date: Saturday, December 13
Time: 12:00 p.m. ET
Location: Amerant Bank Arena
TV: ACC Network
Radio: Seminole Sports Network
The game is officially designated a “Seminole Heritage” game, celebrating FSU’s enduring relationship with the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
🟦 Meaning Behind the Turquoise
FSU will wear Nike N7 turquoise uniforms, symbolizing harmony, friendship, and fellowship in Native American culture.
The N7 program supports sports and physical activity in Native American and Indigenous communities nationwide.
📈 Osceola’s Basketball Background
High school standout at NSU University School (Class of 2025).
Senior season: 15.3 PPG, 5.2 APG, team captain.
Career highs: 45 points (junior year), 30 points (senior year).
Set a school record with 107 points over a three-game stretch.
🧠 Bigger Than Basketball
Osceola’s late grandfather, Joe Dan Osceola, was offered an FSU football scholarship in 1954 and later served as President/Vice Chairman of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
Tribe leaders called Osceola’s presence at FSU a moment that can open doors for future Indigenous athletes nationwide.
🏈 FSU–Georgia Series May Shift to Neutral Site 🏈
A long-awaited home-and-home between Florida State and Georgia could look very different than originally planned.
🔥 Neutral Site in Play for 2028
Georgia and FSU are exploring moving the 2028 matchup to Tampa, per the Athens Banner-Herald.
The likely venue would be Raymond James Stadium, home of the Buccaneers.
Georgia reportedly approached FSU about the change after successfully shifting other rivalry games to neutral sites.
💨 A Series with Deep History
The programs last met in the 2023 Orange Bowl (Georgia won 63–3).
FSU and UGA haven’t played a regular-season game since 1964.
Georgia leads the all-time series 7–4–1; the rivalry was played almost annually from 1954–65.
📉📈 Programs Moving in Opposite Directions
Since 2023, FSU endured a historic 2–10 season in 2024 and missed bowl eligibility again in 2025.
Georgia has remained a College Football Playoff fixture, earning byes in back-to-back seasons and winning an SEC title.
FSU’s early 2025 upset of Alabama showed promise, but momentum faded quickly.
🔒 Why It Matters
A neutral-site shift would reduce FSU’s home-field upside in one of its biggest future nonconference games and underscores the leverage Georgia currently holds as both programs chart very different trajectories.
🏈 Brandon Harris Headed to Florida — Not Tallahassee 🏈
Florida State’s expected hire at defensive backs coach took a late turn, as Brandon Harris is now set to join Florida’s staff instead.
🔥 What Changed
Harris was initially expected to join FSU’s staff but ultimately opted for Gainesville.
CBS Sports and 247Sports reported the late reversal after earlier indications pointed toward Tallahassee.
Harris is the younger brother of current FSU wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr.
💨 Coaching Background
Most recently served as co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach at FAU (2022–24).
Helped FAU produce:
11 interceptions and 2 defensive TDs in 2024
At least one turnover in 8 of 12 games
A top-40 national red zone defense
Seven opponents held to 25 points or fewer (including AAC champion Army)
Coached multiple all-conference defensive backs, including:
CJ Heard (Third Team All-AAC, 82 tackles as a true freshman)
Jarron Morris (All-Conference in 2023; team leader in TFLs, INTs, PBUs, and forced fumbles)
🧠 Deep Florida Ties
South Florida native with strong recruiting connections in the region.
Played at Miami; Second Team All-American and First Team All-ACC selection.
Second-round NFL Draft pick (2011), with six seasons in the NFL and a Grey Cup championship in 2017.
Previously coached at FIU (2021) and served as a defensive analyst at FSU (2020).
🔒 Why It Matters
FSU misses out on a South Florida–connected defensive backs coach with proven turnover production, while Florida capitalizes on late-cycle momentum to land a veteran developer and recruiter.
🏈 FSU WR Camdon Frier Enters the Transfer Portal 🏈
Florida State redshirt freshman wide receiver Camdon Frier is departing the program after two seasons, entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.
🔥 What We Know
Frier is a legacy player; he’s the son of former Seminole Matt Frier.
The 6-foot, 192-pound receiver is from Lake City, Florida.
He appeared in four games during the 2025 season but did not record any statistics.
💨 Development Timeline
Missed his true freshman season due to an offseason injury and earned a redshirt.
Entered 2025 healthy but remained buried on the depth chart.
🧠 What’s Next
Frier will have at least three years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.
The Division I Transfer Portal window runs from January 2–16, with just one window in 2026.
🏈 Transfer Portal Departures: Breaking Down the Impact 🏈
With the January 2 portal window approaching, Florida State has already seen ten players announce intentions to leave. Before turning the page to additions, here’s a clear-eyed look at what FSU is actually losing.
🔥 Minimal Impact Departures
WR Willy Suarez
Former walk-on who flashed in practice but never carved out a role on the field.TE Luke Douglas
Scout team contributor over two seasons; no on-field production.DT Jamorie Flagg
2024 signee who never developed into a rotation player; likely to find snaps at a G6 level.DT Tyeland Coleman
Junior college addition expected to provide immediate depth but rarely saw the field in 2025.DB Christian White
Walk-on who provided quality scout team reps; minimal impact on game-day roster.
💨 Medium Impact Departures
RB Jaylin Lucas
Gadget player and return specialist who flashed explosiveness but never became a consistent offensive piece. Usage remained sporadic under Gus Malzahn, and punt returns were a struggle.OT Mario Nash
A notable financial investment last cycle. Served on the scout team before portaling out, raising questions about FSU’s internal evaluation process.EDGE Jessie Harrold
Similar to Nash — a higher-priced acquisition who departed after one year. Moving on may be correct, but the miss still costs roster capital.
🚨 High Impact Departure
DB Edwin Joseph
One of FSU’s more talented defensive backs in 2025, though consistency was an issue. His departure appears mutual after multiple public sideline confrontations with Mike Norvell. Losing a starting safety from a thin room hurts — but cultural alignment ultimately won out.
🧠 Why It Matters
Most portal exits so far reflect depth trims and evaluation corrections — not wholesale talent loss. Edwin Joseph is the lone departure with true on-field impact, underscoring why FSU’s portal approach this winter must prioritize quality replacements over volume.
🏈 Who’s Actually Running the FSU Offense in 2026? 🏈
With assistant hires rolling in and front-office turnover underway, one major question remains unresolved: who will be calling plays for Florida State next season?
🔥 The Malzahn Uncertainty
Mike Norvell declined to confirm Gus Malzahn’s return when asked directly, saying he wouldn’t comment on coordinator spots.
Malzahn also avoided the question previously, offering no clarity on his intentions for 2026.
If his return were settled, the silence itself feels telling and has fueled speculation about a potential separation.
💨 Mixed Signals Everywhere
FSU hired Kam Martin, Malzahn’s former running backs coach, which suggests continuity.
At the same time, the school has not publicly confirmed Malzahn’s status weeks after the season ended.
That disconnect has left fans, players, and recruits guessing at a critical moment in the offseason.
🧠 Evaluating Year One Under Malzahn
Context matters: FSU’s offense improved dramatically in 2025 after bottoming out in 2024.
Malzahn and OL coach Herb Hand clearly raised the floor, even if road struggles and inconsistency persisted.
The bigger concern is ceiling; particularly at quarterback.
🔑 The QB Question Looms Largest
Tommy Castellanos was a serviceable stop-gap, but not a long-term answer.
FSU must land a high-end quarterback in the portal, regardless of Castellanos’ eligibility appeal.
Whether Malzahn can attract and maximize that caliber of QB is the central question.
🧠 Corey Clark’s Read on the Dynamic
The Malzahn–Norvell relationship felt awkward at times in Year 1: communication, rotations, and in-game flow all raised eyebrows.
Still, continuity wouldn’t be catastrophic especially if it keeps key offensive pieces and Herb Hand in Tallahassee.
The problem isn’t Malzahn alone. It’s the lack of clarity with the portal opening soon.
🔒 Why It Matters
FSU is weeks away from the transfer portal opening with no confirmed offensive coordinator, no starting quarterback, and uncertainty in the front office; a risky combination for a program desperate to stabilize and build momentum in 2026.
And that’s a wrap!
Florida State is standing at an intersection right now.
There are moments worth celebrating like Xavier Osceola wearing the garnet and gold (and turquoise) in a Seminole Heritage game; a great reminder of what makes this place different.
At the same time, the football program is navigating uncertainty on multiple fronts: staff decisions, portal departures, quarterback urgency, and unanswered questions at the very top of the offensive structure.
Some of this offseason is about patience.
Some of it is about urgency.
And some of it is about finally choosing a direction — and committing to it.
The next few weeks won’t just shape the roster.
They’ll shape the belief around this program heading into 2026.
More tomorrow,
— The Chief
