🏹 Welcome to The Chief Brief! 🏹

Happy Monday, Seminole! We’ve got a LONG one today with some updates on the defensive coordinator search and a TON of recruiting news. Here’s what in store:

🏈 FSU Defensive Coordinator Rumor Mill 🏈
The search for Florida State’s next defensive coordinator is heating up, with multiple sources suggesting an announcement could come by Monday or Tuesday. Potential candidates like SMU’s Scott Symons, Nebraska’s Tony White, and others are being closely watched as FSU aims to solidify its coaching staff before the Early Signing Period.

🏈 Four-Star Edge Rusher LaJesse Harrold Visits FSU After Decommitting from LSU 🏈
Four-star edge rusher LaJesse Harrold, who recently decommitted from LSU, visited FSU and had a positive experience. Harrold continues to develop a strong connection with the Seminoles’ staff, though his decision remains uncertain as his recruitment heats up.

🏈 Tae’shaun Gelsey Visits FSU, Sparks Drama in Recruitment 🏈
Four-star wide receiver/tight end Tae’shaun Gelsey, a Florida commit, visited FSU and was impressed by the program. Despite his strong visit, Gelsey remains undecided, with his decision likely influenced by his experience with FSU’s staff and new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.

🔑 Retaining Key Players for the Future 🔑
Mike Norvell is focusing on retaining key underclassmen for the 2025 season, including RB Micahi Danzy, LB Justin Cryer, and CB Charles Lester III. Norvell's efforts to maintain a strong roster amid challenges are crucial for FSU’s rebuild.

🏈 Solomon Thomas: Still Committed, But the Decision Isn’t Final 🏈
Five-star offensive lineman Solomon Thomas remains committed to FSU but is still evaluating his future after recent visits to LSU and Florida. Thomas’ decision will hinge on the hire of FSU’s offensive line coach and the program’s direction moving forward.

🏈 Georgia Commit Ousmane Kromah Visits FSU, Flip Still Uncertain 🏈
Four-star running back Ousmane Kromah, a Georgia commit, visited FSU and remains undecided about his recruitment. Despite the uncertainty, Kromah’s positive visit and confidence in FSU’s future make the Seminoles a contender.

🏈 USF Commit Sean Poret Visits FSU, Keeps Options Open 🏈
Offensive line commit Sean Poret, currently pledged to USF, visited FSU and was impressed by the program’s resilience. As the Early Signing Period approaches, Poret is keeping his options open and considering FSU alongside other schools like NC State and Vanderbilt.

🏈 Four-Star OL Peyton Joseph Flips to Georgia Tech 🏈
Four-star offensive lineman Peyton Joseph has flipped his commitment from FSU to Georgia Tech following a visit this weekend. As FSU works to retain key commitments, the Seminoles are focusing on securing their 2025 class as signing day approaches.

🏈 FSU Defensive Coordinator Rumor Mill 🏈

The search for Florida State’s next defensive coordinator is heating up, with rumors swirling about potential candidates. Several key defensive recruits who visited this weekend have indicated that FSU could announce its hire as soon as Monday or Tuesday.

🔍 Narrowing Down the Candidates 🔍
Unlike the offensive coordinator search, the list of defensive coordinator candidates remains more elusive. However, some sources suggest that Mike Norvell has focused on one candidate, and an announcement could be imminent.

💥 The Case for SMU’s Scott Symons? 💥
One possible candidate is Scott Symons, currently the defensive coordinator at SMU, who is preparing for the ACC Championship against Clemson on Saturday. If Symons is FSU’s pick, it would make sense for the school to wait until after the game to make any announcements. This goes against what recruits are being told regarding a timeline for announcement and few would classify Symons as a “big name.”

🤔 Tony White’s Rumored Involvement 🤔
There’s been growing buzz around Tony White, Nebraska’s defensive coordinator, with some sources claiming he’s already interviewed for the position. However, neither Nebraska insiders nor reliable sources have been able or willing to confirm these reports. For now, it seems the rumors surrounding White remain unverified, though they’re worth monitoring.

📋 Other Candidates in the Mix 📋
A few other names continue to be in the mix, including Colorado’s Robert Livingston, who has NFL experience. While he may not be considered a “big name,” his background could make him a solid candidate. Additionally, Georgia Tech’s Tyler Santucci was an early contender, though momentum seems to have stalled. Lastly, Chris Hampton, currently the co-defensive coordinator and DBs at Oregon, seems to still be worth watching.

With the experts having been confident in Brendan Marion becoming the next OC for about a week and largely caught off guard by the Gus Malzahn hire, it’s possible a new “big name” could suddenly enter the mix. Keep on the lookout!

🏈 Four-Star Edge Rusher LaJesse Harrold Visits FSU After Decommitting from LSU 🏈

Just days after decommitting from LSU, four-star edge rusher LaJesse Harrold made his way to Tallahassee for an official visit with Florida State. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound prospect is ranked among the top-150 players in the country.

🔑 A Smooth Visit and Growing Relationship with FSU’s Staff 🔑
Harrold had a positive experience during his visit. "It was pretty good. It was a smooth visit," Harrold said. "I really liked the environment and atmosphere." He has developed a strong relationship with defensive ends coach John Papuchis, who Harrold praises for his honesty and track record of developing NFL talent. “He produced a lot of great athletes for the draft and everything,” Harrold added. “He's a really good coach and pretty cool too.”

Harrold’s Recruitment Heating Up
Although much of his recruitment has flown under the radar, Harrold’s visit has many believing he could land at FSU. Several analysts have logged predictions for Harrold to sign with the Seminoles following his decommitment from LSU. Despite the buzz, Harrold remains unsure about his decision, stating, “That will be up for discussion … I’m not really completely sure.”

🌟 Feeling at Home with FSU 🌟
Harrold felt a strong connection during his visit. “I really felt comfortable here,” he said. “It was a real good environment. I had some fun being around the staff and other recruits.” He also noted that while FSU has yet to name a new defensive coordinator following Adam Fuller’s departure, head coach Mike Norvell provided insight into the defensive direction the Seminoles are headed. “They are looking to get after it on the defensive side,” Harrold shared.

🚨 The Decision Looms 🚨
As Harrold’s recruitment continues, the question of whether he will choose FSU remains unanswered. “We’ll see … y’all will figure it out sooner than later,” Harrold said, leaving fans eagerly awaiting his next move. At least one recruiting expert has placed a projection for Harrold to select the Noles.

🏈 Tae’shaun Gelsey Visits FSU, Sparks Drama in Recruitment 🏈

As the recruitment of four-star wide receiver/tight end Tae’shaun Gelsey reaches its final stretch, Florida State is working hard to secure a late flip from rival Florida. Gelsey, who has been committed to the Gators, made his way to Tallahassee to watch FSU face off against the program that currently holds his commitment.

🔑 A Draw Between FSU and UF, But Gelsey Impressed 🔑
Gelsey acknowledged that the visit to FSU was a valuable experience, even though the recruiting battle remains tight. “It was about environment, and with the environment, it was great,” Gelsey said. “It was how I thought it would be … Then see them compete against each other. That’s really all I came to see.”

Norvell’s Energy Making an Impact
While Gelsey is familiar with FSU’s incoming offensive coordinator, Gus Malzahn, the standout pass-catcher was focused on his experience with FSU’s staff during his visit. He noted that head coach Mike Norvell’s energy has left a lasting impression. “Coach Norvell has a lot of energy and he always treats every player the right way,” Gelsey shared.

📝 Gelsey’s Final Decision Looms 📝
Despite his positive visit, Gelsey remains conflicted about his decision. “I’m still going to do the research on the best spot,” he said. Gelsey plans to speak with those around him and consult coaches from both FSU and Florida before making his final choice, which he hopes to have locked in by Tuesday or Wednesday.

🔑 Retaining Key Players for the Future 🔑

Mike Norvell is focusing on keeping underclassmen who will be crucial for Florida State’s rebuild. Retaining top talent from the 2023 and 2024 classes is essential as FSU looks to bounce back from a tough season.

Norvell isn’t begging players to stay but wants those committed to the program’s future. His comments after the Florida loss showed his confidence in the group and his focus on developing players who stay and grow through adversity.

🏈 Top 10 Underclassmen FSU Needs to Keep 🏈
Here are 10 players essential for FSU’s 2025 foundation:

  1. RB Micahi Danzy
Danzy’s speed is rare and could be a game-changer if properly utilized.

  2. LB Justin Cryer
Cryer is a mature, reliable linebacker with plenty of room for growth.

  3. CB Charles Lester III
A redshirt freshman with great potential, Lester is a cornerstone for the secondary.

  4. TE Landen Thomas
A promising freshman, Thomas showed solid production. Keeping him is key before SEC teams come calling.

  5. CB Quindarrius Jones
Jones’ physical talent gives him starter potential for next season.

  6. LB Blake Nichelson
Nichelson’s improvement over the season makes him a valuable asset moving forward.

  7. WR Destyn Hill
Hill’s talent before injury was undeniable. FSU needs him back alongside other young receivers.

  8. WR Lawayne McCoy
McCoy has the athleticism and drive to be a key part of the offense in 2025.

  9. TE/DE Amaree Williams
Williams’ versatility makes him an exciting prospect, and if healthy, he’ll be a major asset.

  10. QB Luke Kromenhoek
Kromenhoek’s development is crucial for FSU’s offense. With the right pieces around him, he could lead the team into 2025 and beyond.

💬 Norvell on Accountability 💬
Norvell stressed the importance of accountability in the face of a challenging season. While transfers are an option, he’s focused on keeping players who are committed to the program. The goal is to build a team that embraces hard work, resilience, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact at FSU.

🏈 Solomon Thomas: Still Committed, But the Decision Isn’t Final 🏈

As the 2025 recruiting cycle nears its conclusion, all eyes are on Florida State's top-ranked commit, five-star offensive lineman Solomon Thomas. After recent visits to LSU and Florida, Thomas returned to FSU this past weekend to watch the Seminoles face the Gators in Doak Campbell Stadium.

🔑 Thomas' Confidence in Norvell and FSU’s Future 🔑
Despite FSU’s tough season, Thomas remains confident in Mike Norvell’s leadership. "I believe in what Norvell is doing and what he's trying to do. I believe in that Florida State definitely hired the right head coach for the job," Thomas shared after attending the game. He emphasized his commitment to FSU, even as other programs continue to pursue him.

🛠️ Offensive Line Coach a Key Factor in Decision 🛠️
Thomas, who stands at 6-4 and 315 pounds, has made it clear that the hire of FSU’s offensive line coach will be crucial to his final decision. However, he left his recent visit without any new clarity on who will fill that role.

🌟 Thomas' Confidence in Norvell’s Vision 🌟
While Thomas did not comment on Gus Malzahn’s hiring as offensive coordinator, he remains impressed by Norvell’s leadership. "He's a great person, he's a great coach, he's a great leader," Thomas said. "But things are definitely going to change around Tallahassee."

📝 Thomas’ Commitment Status 📝
Heading into the Early Signing Period, Thomas reiterated that he remains committed to FSU. Despite interest from other programs, he hasn’t closed the door on other possibilities. "I'm still committed to Florida State," Thomas confirmed.

While the deadline for signing is approaching, Thomas hinted that he may not sign immediately, stating, "The Signing Period doesn't end until Friday, but ultimately, I don't have to sign at all. I can just be enrolled into a school."

🏈 Georgia Commit Ousmane Kromah Visits FSU, Flip Still Uncertain 🏈

Four-star running back Ousmane Kromah, a Georgia commit, returned to Tallahassee to watch Florida State take on rival Florida this past Saturday. With FSU still hoping to flip Kromah after losing running back Byron Louis to the Gators earlier in the week, the Seminoles are making a strong push to bring him aboard.

🔑 Kromah Keeps Future Plans Close to the Chest 🔑
Kromah remained tight-lipped about his recruitment following the visit. "Can’t really talk about that," he said when asked about his future. The 6-foot, 215-pound back is ranked as a top 100 player in the 2025 class and one of the top five running backs by On3.

Spending Time with Coach Norvell
“I’m just coming to hang out, for real,” Kromah added. “Just coming to talk to Coach Norvell.” Despite his early commitment to Georgia, Kromah had FSU in the running until his commitment in October. Auburn is another school vying to flip him.

📜 FSU Signing Day Papers in Hand 📜
As Kromah left campus Sunday morning, he was spotted carrying FSU signing day papers, adding intrigue to his recruitment.

💭 Confidence in Norvell’s Future 💭
Despite his commitment to Georgia, Kromah remains confident that FSU will rebound in 2025 under Coach Mike Norvell. "I think this year’s a fluke," Kromah said. "I can’t really say too much because this isn’t the team I’m committed to. But realistically, I think it is going to change, because he’s one of those coaches that makes sure."

📊 Researching Malzahn’s Hiring 📊
Kromah also commented on the rumors surrounding Gus Malzahn as FSU’s new offensive coordinator. “I heard he’s a great coach,” Kromah said. “I’m gonna do my research when I get home. My quarterback, Weston (Bryan), loves him. So I’m gonna take his word for it and I’m gonna check him out.”

📝 Signing Day Looms 📝
Kromah is set to sign on Wednesday afternoon at Lee County High School, likely around 2:30-3 p.m. ET.

🏈 FSU’s Potential Transfer Targets from UCF 🏈

With Gus Malzahn set to be officially announced as Florida State's new offensive coordinator, it’s worth considering which UCF players might follow him to Tallahassee. After four seasons as UCF's head coach, Malzahn could bring a few familiar faces with him—players who could make an immediate impact for the Seminoles in 2025.

🔑 Five UCF Players Who Could Strengthen FSU’s Roster 🔑
These five players could help address key needs for FSU next season, thanks to their skill sets and Malzahn’s connections:

  1. TE Randy Pittman Jr.
Pittman, a former FSU commit who flipped to UCF, has been a reliable target with 51 catches for 631 yards and 2 touchdowns over two seasons. While he’s not the biggest (6-2, 225), his receiving ability would immediately raise the floor of FSU’s tight end room and allow Amaree Williams to focus more on defense.

  2. IOL Caden Kitler
Kitler, a redshirt sophomore, had a strong debut season as UCF’s starting center, earning a solid 69.6 PFF grade. At 6-2, 295 pounds, he may not have ideal size, but his ability to leverage defenders with his low center of gravity and his mobility in sealing blocks makes him an intriguing option for FSU’s offensive line.

  3. DT Lee Hunter
Hunter, with his NFL-caliber size (6-4, 320), is a dominant force on the defensive line. He posted 131 tackles and 21.5 TFLs over the last three seasons and carries a PFF grade of 77.4. With ties to Malzahn from Auburn to UCF, Hunter could be an instant starter and a key asset for FSU’s defensive front.

  4. DE Malachi Lawrence
Lawrence has recorded 12.5 sacks in the past two seasons and stands at 6-4, 250 pounds. While his consistency can fluctuate, his ability to rush the passer in key moments makes him a valuable depth piece for FSU’s defensive line.

  5. DE Nyjalik Kelly
Once committed to FSU before flipping to Miami, Kelly has proven to be effective at UCF, tallying 5.5 sacks and 23 QB pressures with an impressive 79.6 PFF grade. Kelly could step in immediately as a starter on FSU’s defensive line, adding much-needed firepower to their pass rush.

🏈 Teriq Mallory Visits FSU, Keeps Decision Open 🏈

Three-star wide receiver Teriq Mallory, a West Virginia commit, visited Florida State over the weekend and left impressed. While he remains committed to the Mountaineers, the Seminoles are still in the running for his signature before the Early Signing Period.

🔑 FSU Exceeds Expectations 🔑
Mallory was impressed by his visit, saying FSU met and exceeded his expectations. "I loved it. It was a great environment," he shared. FSU has long been a "dream school" for him, and the visit reinforced his positive view of the program.

🌟 Building a Connection with Coach Norvell 🌟
Mallory developed a stronger bond with head coach Mike Norvell, praising his leadership and the team’s attitude despite a challenging season. "I love Coach Norvell. I just love the attitude and the culture," Mallory said.

🔥 Impressed by FSU’s Fight and Kromenhoek 🔥
Mallory was also impressed by FSU's fight in the rivalry game with Florida, and he spoke highly of true freshman quarterback Luke Kromenhoek, noting his "lot of heart."

💭 No Worries Over Coaching Changes 💭
Despite changes to FSU’s offensive staff, including the expected hiring of Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator, Mallory isn’t overly concerned. He trusts Norvell's leadership and approach with the wide receivers.

📝 Decision Coming Soon 📝
Mallory remains committed to West Virginia but plans to finalize his decision soon after consulting with his family. "I just want to sleep on it, pray on it," Mallory said.

🏈 USF Commit Sean Poret Visits FSU, Keeps Options Open 🏈

Offensive line commit Sean Poret, currently pledged to USF, visited Florida State this weekend for his official visit. After impressing at FSU’s Elite Camp, Poret has become a top target for the Seminoles at the offensive tackle position.

🔑 Impressed by FSU’s Resilience 🔑
Despite FSU’s tough season, Poret was impressed by the program’s determination to bounce back. "They're going to keep working," Poret said. "They’ve had an off year, but the big thing is bouncing back next year."

🌟 First Game Day Experience in Tallahassee 🌟
Saturday’s visit marked Poret’s first game day experience in Tallahassee, and he was impressed by the atmosphere. "It was a good experience with all the fans. Super happy to see the crowd and the field," he shared, though acknowledging the game’s outcome wasn’t ideal. "Mainly just building, working toward next year."

🤝 Strong Relationship with Coach Fertitta 🤝
Poret has a solid relationship with FSU offensive line assistant Gabe Fertitta, who has been handling the duties since Alex Atkins' departure. "He's my guy. He's the reason I'm here right now," Poret said.

💭 OL Coach and Malzahn’s Impact 💭
Poret expressed trust in FSU’s future offensive line hire, noting it’s someone he’ll trust to help build the program. He also praised Gus Malzahn’s hiring as offensive coordinator, calling it a "great hire."

🏠 Family Comfort and Decision Time 🏠
With the Early Signing Period approaching, Poret’s family has always had a soft spot for FSU. "It’s good to come up here," Poret said, with his parents, siblings, and grandmother joining him on the visit. Their comfort with the program will play a key role in his final decision.

📝 Keeping Options Open 📝
While Poret remains committed to USF, he is keeping his options open. "I’m just trying to make the best decision that I can," he said, also considering NC State and Vanderbilt as potential destinations.

🏈 Four-Star OL Peyton Joseph Flips to Georgia Tech 🏈

Four-star offensive lineman Peyton Joseph has flipped his commitment from Florida State to Georgia Tech. Joseph, who originally committed to FSU in July, visited Georgia Tech this weekend and made the flip official with a public announcement on Sunday.

🔑 Recent OL Flips and Recruiting Focus 🔑
Joseph follows Daniel Pierre Louis, who also flipped after the firing of offensive line coach and coordinator Alex Atkins in November. Pierre Louis committed to Florida late last month. With Joseph’s flip, FSU is now focusing on holding onto five-star Solomon Thomas and four-star Mario Nash as signing day approaches.

🏠 FSU’s OL Coaching Vacancy and Signing Period 🏠
FSU has yet to announce a hire for the offensive line coach position, with the Early Signing Period opening Wednesday. The Seminoles are working to solidify their 2025 class amid coaching changes.

📝 Joseph’s Ranking 📝
According to the 247Sports Composite, Joseph is the No. 12 interior offensive line prospect and the No. 217 overall prospect in the class of 2025. He becomes the ninth decommitment for FSU this cycle, with all nine coming after the Seminoles’ tough 2-10 2024 campaign.

And that’s a wrap!

As the Early Signing Period looms, Florida State continues to navigate a pivotal moment in its recruitment and coaching staff transitions.

With critical decisions to be made, both on the field and off, the Seminoles are pushing forward with a renewed focus on building for the future. From retaining key underclassmen to securing flips and solidifying coaching hires, FSU’s efforts over the next few days will set the stage for a more promising 2025 season.

Stay tuned for the latest updates as this recruitment cycle reaches its climax. Go Noles! 🏹
