🎤 Everything Norvell Said at His Preseason Press Conference 🎤
Two days before fall camp opens, Mike Norvell held his preseason press conference on Monday, updating injuries, praising several returners, and outlining how the staff plans to use its two star true freshman receivers.
Sophomore receiver Jayvan Boggs and linebacker Mikai Gbayor are both progressing but not yet full participants, with Norvell calling their Week 1 availability "an open door of opportunity." Defensive lineman Jordan Sanders, meanwhile, will be full go entering camp.
Freshman linebacker Izayia Williams is fully cleared from the ACL tear that cost him his senior season of high school, a big development for a linebacker room that has otherwise leaned on transfers. Freshman EDGE Cam Brooks will be back but limited early, and JUCO linebacker Chris Thomas continues working through his own knee rehab.
Norvell reaffirmed an "immediate yes" on whether true freshman receivers Jasen Lopez and Devin Carter will play significant roles this fall, a stance he first offered this spring. Both flashed during a spring where Duce Robinson, Micahi Danzy, and Boggs were all limited in various ways.
Norvell singled out Daniel Lyons, Deante McCray, and Ashlynd Barker as defensive players who took real steps forward this offseason, along with Andre Otto up front and Samuel Singleton Jr. in the backfield. He also praised the growth of Ja'Bril Rawls and Quindarrius Jones at cornerback after both battled injuries last season.
On quarterback Ashton Daniels, Norvell pointed to his mindset and leadership as much as his physical tools, saying Daniels has "the right edge" entering a season that will define his time in Tallahassee.

FSU currently has zero offensive linemen committed in the 2027 cycle, and sources have told 247Sports that Mike Norvell's hot seat status has made some recruits hesitant to commit before knowing who will be coaching them.

Garrett said the days of building a class and developing it over four or five years are gone, describing roster building as closer to a six-month cycle given how often players can leave through the portal.
He said evaluation, not budget, remains the constant that separates good and bad rosters, comparing it to how pro sports' biggest spenders don't always win championships.
📜 The 5-for-5 Rule
The NCAA's new age-based eligibility model gives athletes five years of eligibility within a five-year window, effectively ending the redshirt system as it's been known. Garrett called it a rule the industry expected and one that should help stabilize rosters.

White used five different linebackers for over 200 snaps last season in his 3-3-5 system. Returners Blake Nichelson and Omar Graham Jr. are joined by transfers Chris Jones and Mikai Gbayor, with JUCO product Chris Thomas and veteran AJ Cottrill also in the mix.

2028 shooting guard Chacho Womack, the No. 75 overall player in his class, holds an FSU offer among several others and cited Patrick Williams, a fellow product of his high school, as a point of familiarity with the program.
Florida State will host LSU for an exhibition game on October 24 at the Donald L. Tucker Center, the second of three expected preseason tune-ups before the regular season.
