Senior safety Ashlynd Barker is in his fourth preseason camp at FSU, and after a breakout 2025 season, his position coach says the transition from example-setter to full-blown vocal leader is complete.
📈 The Trust Cooper Has in Him
Safeties coach Evan Cooper said he believed Barker was an NFL player before he'd ever started a game, and that belief has only grown since Barker took over the rover spot vacated by Earl Little Jr. "It's his room," Cooper said.
Barker credited last year's example, specifically watching veteran Jerry Wilson's extra work, for pushing him to take his own preparation up a level this offseason.
🧠 Growth Beyond the Physical
Cooper pointed to Barker's improved pattern recognition against opposing offenses as a sign his football IQ has caught up to his physical tools, something that should help him diagnose plays faster as the rover.
Why It Matters: FSU is leaning on Barker to be both a stabilizing veteran presence and a new-position starter at the same time. If Cooper's evaluation is right, he could be one of the most valuable pieces of this defense. 🍢
With an entirely new starting five up front for the second straight year, position-by-position battles are starting to sort themselves out as camp gets underway.
✅ The Likely Locks
Auburn transfer Xavier Chaplin is a lock at left tackle after starting 37 consecutive games at Virginia Tech and Auburn, and he already has chemistry with Ashton Daniels from blocking for him last season. Center appears set with Bradyn Welch-Joiner, though redshirt freshman Chavez Thompson is pushing him in camp.
🔄 Still Sorting Out
Left guard looks like Andre Otto's job after praise for his leadership and consistent spring reps, and right guard appears to belong to Nate Pabst. Right tackle remains the biggest question, with Chimdia Nwaiwu the presumed favorite but Pabst or Jonathan Daniels both viable alternatives if he struggles with consistency.
Why It Matters: OL coach Herb Hand made clear that the exact alignment matters less than depth right now, since a "next-man-up" moment is inevitable over a full season. Getting the right five to gel before Week 0 is still the priority. 🍢
As FSU shifts back to Mike Norvell's playcalling, expect a heavier dose of tight ends, and position coach Chris Thomsen says this year's room has the pieces to make that work.
🏈 Riles as the Move Piece
East Carolina transfer Desirrio Riles projects as a slot-heavy weapon, with OC Tim Harris Jr. comparing his route-running to that of the receiver room. Riles caught 28 passes for 362 yards at ECU last season and is fully healthy after an ankle injury limited him some in the spring.
💪 Building Around Him
Landen Thomas enters healthy for the first time in his career and says he's taken his conditioning far more seriously this offseason. Redshirt freshman Chase Loftin has added 15 pounds to his 6-foot-6 frame, giving FSU a potential in-line option to pair with Riles in two-tight-end sets.
Why It Matters: Norvell's offenses have historically leaned on 12-personnel more than most, and having multiple tight ends who can both block and separate gives Daniels real flexibility as he settles into a new system. 🍢

🏃 Dalvin Cook and Antonio Cromartie
Swinney grouped Dalvin Cook alongside Louisville's Lamar Jackson as the two players who consistently made him "hold his breath." Cook rushed for 312 yards and four touchdowns against Clemson across three career meetings.
Swinney also called Antonio Cromartie "a creature," recalling him as unlike any cornerback he coached against during his years as Clemson's receivers coach.

Barnes, a Martin, Tennessee native, cited Neyland Stadium and the coaching staff's consistent attention as decisive factors. Tennessee now holds 10 in-state commits in its 2027 class.
FSU's top-ranked in-state commit in the same class, safety Za'Kari Johnson, checks in at just No. 30 in Florida, despite Florida being a far deeper recruiting state than Tennessee.
Why It Matters: FSU still landed real wins this cycle in Ta'Shawn Poole and Meshi Dobson, but the broader pattern of relying on out-of-state recruits while ceding in-state ground is a structural concern that outlasts any single miss. 🍢

FSU volleyball outside hitter Kyleene Filimaua was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team Thursday, one of just seven programs represented on the 18-player squad.

📝 Recruiting Notebook 📝
The Louisiana linebacker will visit Tallahassee for the Clemson game on Oct. 31, one of 12 marquee matchups on his visit schedule. He specifically credited linebackers coach Ernie Sims' daily contact as a major factor.
Tennessee holds an early edge for the four-star tackle, but Farmer said a 30-minute in-office conversation with Mike Norvell left a strong impression, putting FSU right behind the Vols alongside Auburn.
The Mississippi defensive lineman, who only returned to football this spring after focusing on basketball, picked up offers from Miami and Ole Miss this week and is looking to add FSU to his fall visit list.
