Let’s break down the day:
⚾️ Game 1: Volini’s Masterclass Fuels Gritty 4–2 Victory
The bats were quiet — but Joey Volini made sure the Irish were even quieter.
In a seven-inning contest to open the day, Volini tossed his second consecutive complete game, punching out 11 and allowing just four hits on a season-high 104 pitches. He wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the first and settled in from there, giving FSU the steady hand it needed after a sloppy series opener.
💣 Gage Harrelson delivered two RBI, including the game-sealing solo homer in the 7th — his third of the year — while Brody DeLamielleure tied things with an RBI double in the 4th.
🧠 Efficiency + Edge:
• Volini is now 7–0 in seven starts, with a sparkling 1.25 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and 13.09 K/9.
• His outing marked the third time he’s hit double-digit strikeouts this season.
Despite producing just three hits, the Noles clawed their way to a win, thanks to elite pitching, timely defense, and Harrelson’s late insurance bomb.
⚾️ Game 2: 17-Run Statement Caps Series Comeback
If Game 1 was all about grit, Game 2 was a full-on explosion.
The Noles dropped 14 runs in the first three innings, burying the Irish early in a 17–9 offensive showcase.
🚨 Freshman DH James Hankerson Jr. stole the spotlight in his first career start: • 3-for-5
• 6 RBI (most by a Seminole this season)
• 476-foot nuke for his first career homer
💥 Power Parade:
• Alex Lodise: 2 HRs (10 on the year), 3-hit day
• Max Williams: 2-run 💣 (443 ft, 112 MPH exit velo) — his team-leading 12th
• Carter McCulley: 1st career HR in a 7-run 2nd inning
Coach Link Jarrett shuffled the Game 2 lineup — and it paid off in a massive way.
Pitching-wise, the Noles used a committee approach. Wes Mendes tossed two clean innings before running into trouble in the 3rd. From there, FSU cycled through six relievers, with Chris Knier and Payton Manca combining to close things out with a pair of scoreless frames.
📈 Series & Season Snapshot:
• FSU has now won all 7 series to open the season
• The Noles are 23–4 overall, 7–2 in ACC play, and clicking in every phase when it counts
📍 Next Up:
The Seminoles return home Tuesday to face Jacksonville at 6 PM (ACCNX). FSU took the first meeting 9–6 back in February.

🧃 Buzz from the Scrimmage: Standouts, Surprises & Stock Watch
FSU's first scrimmage of the spring is in the books — and there’s no shortage of buzz. The Noles247 crew tapped into its wide network of sources for insider notes on who impressed, what stood out, and how the roster is taking shape.
Here’s what they’re saying:
💥 Quarterback Room Rundown
Tommy Castellanos: Flashes of brilliance, but still ironing out some decision-making and accuracy issues. The athleticism is real — and teammates love him.
Brock Glenn: Quietly steady. A solid showing on Saturday.
Kevin Sperry: The freshman might’ve made the most noise — with multiple deep-ball dimes that turned heads. Still raw, but the upside? Serious.
🔥 Skill Spotlights
RB Roydell Williams looked smooth post-injury, and Jaylin Lucas ripped off a TD run — both trending up.
WR Duce Robinson continues to earn praise. One source said he’s “the real deal.” Minor injury note (limping), but no major concern.
Jayvan Boggs is thriving in pads, and Tae’shaun Gelsey is flashing elite movement at his size.
Willy Suarez popped with a 60-yard catch. Elijah Moore hauled in multiple TDs.
💪 Tight End Takeover
This room is deep.
Chase Loftin = fast riser
Markeston Douglas had an explosive catch & run
Randy Pittman and Landen Thomas? Locked into the rotation
FSU loves the versatility here — all kinds of body types and skill sets to scheme around.
🧱 Trench Talk
Luke Petitbon: Leadership + performance = glowing reviews
Manasse Itete: A rising star. “Strong as hell” and a nightmare to disengage from
Jacob Rizy: Underwent leg surgery, out for spring but expected back for fall
⚙️ Scheme Shifts
Malzahn’s offense is fast. High tempo, heavy motion, gadget plays — the full playbook is starting to open.
White’s defense is loaded with buzz names:
Darrell Jackson continues to dominate
Elijah Herring, Justin Cryer, and Blake Nichelson are all earning reps and respect
Earl Little Jr. and Charles Lester have stood out in the secondary
🎯 Bottom Line:
The pads are on, the tempo is real, and the competition is heating up. There’s talent everywhere — now it’s about stacking practices and staying healthy.
🎾 Tough Test: Noles Drop 4–1 Battle vs. No. 28 Stanford
Florida State Women’s Tennis (12–6, 3–5 ACC) fought hard but came up short against No. 28 Stanford in a 4–1 decision at the Indoor Tennis Courts on Sunday.
🔥 Fast Start in Doubles
Maelie Monfils and Laura Putz struck first, cruising to a 6–3 win on Court 3 — their fourth ACC win as a pair. But after Stanford answered on Court 2, the point came down to Court 1.
No. 89 Eva Shaw and Maria Juliana Parra Romero jumped out to a 2–0 lead vs. the No. 22 duo in the country — but the Cardinal rallied back, winning 6–4 to take the doubles point.
💥 Lavickova Delivers
Stanford extended their lead to 3–0 with wins on Courts 1 and 2, before Kristyna Lavickova put the Noles on the board with a dominant 6–0, 6–4 win on Court 3 — her first ranked victory of the season.
🚧 Other Highlights:
Putz led 6–2, 3–2 on Court 6 before the match was called
Parra Romero was mid-comeback on Court 5 before going unfinished
