🏈 ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips Remains Optimistic Amid Challenges 🏈
Jim Phillips at the @theACC meetings.
— Richie Barnes (@R_Barnes407)
4:36 PM • May 15, 2024
Despite internal and external challenges, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips expressed optimism about the conference's future during the ACC Spring Meetings. He addressed the ongoing lawsuits from FSU and Clemson, the growing revenue gap with the SEC and Big Ten, and the uncertainty surrounding the ACC's long-term television contract with ESPN.
Key Points:
Revenue Disparity: Phillips acknowledged the widening financial gap but emphasized that the ACC is strategically positioned to navigate these challenges. He noted that while the SEC and Big Ten are expected to earn significantly more from the new 12-team College Football Playoff, the ACC's on-field performance metrics have influenced these financial disparities.
Legal Issues: Phillips discussed the ongoing legal battles with FSU and Clemson, recognizing the difficulties but affirming the ACC's commitment to resolving these disputes. He remains hopeful for a resolution but stands by the conference's right to protect its interests.
TV Contracts: Addressing concerns about the ACC's long-term TV deal with ESPN, Phillips stated that the contract runs through 2036 and described recent meetings with ESPN as "excellent." He indicated that internal discussions are ongoing regarding a specific element of the contract, but he did not speculate on potential financial adjustments.
Future Prospects: Phillips highlighted the addition of Stanford, Cal, and SMU to the ACC, which has yielded additional revenue and increased the conference's national presence. He also mentioned the ACC's new "success initiative," which financially rewards schools for their athletic performance, and a deal with The CW Network to air 50 football and basketball games annually, expanding the conference's exposure.
