🎙️ After the Momentum Swing 🎙️

FSU had scored on its first 22 red-zone trips of the season when Mike Norvell chose to go for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the Louisville 2. A bubble screen to freshman Jasen Lopez lost a yard; Isaac Brown ran 97 yards on the next snap. On3’s Ira Schoffel has the fullest breakdown of the call and its aftermath.

  • What Louisville showed: Lopez motioned across the formation, and safety Kaleb Beasley followed him, signaling man coverage. Duce Robinson and Chase Loftin blocked their defenders, but Beasley got through the traffic and tackled Lopez for the loss. On3

  • Why Norvell went for it: He still backed his thinking after the game. FSU’s defense had stopped Louisville on fourth down and forced a missed field goal in the first quarter; Norvell believed a failed try would at least leave the Cardinals pinned deep. Ashton Daniels said he supported the aggressive choice, too. On3

  • What followed: Brown scored untouched, FSU punted on five straight drives, and Louisville reached the end zone on six of its next seven possessions. Daniels acknowledged the offense let that momentum swing affect its own response. On3

Noles247 columnist Chris Nee argues that FSU leadership has been reluctant to change course despite a recurring road pattern, with the cost of Norvell’s contract hanging over the discussion. That is his assessment, not an announced decision.

Why It Matters: The play call will be debated, but the Miami trip will test the larger problem: whether FSU can recover after the next bad sequence. 🍢🍢

🧱 A Two-Week Defensive Whiplash 🧱

A week after holding Virginia to 37 rushing yards, FSU allowed 397 to Louisville. Isaac Brown had 235 on 17 carries, and the Cardinals scored six rushing touchdowns. Tomahawk Nation calls it the second-most rushing yards FSU has allowed in a game. An On3 report captures Norvell’s frustration with the swing.

  • The reversal started early: Louisville gained only 15 rushing yards in the first quarter. After FSU’s opening stops, the Cardinals scored on seven of their next eight possessions, including five straight touchdowns. On3 notes that this was the second time this season FSU has allowed five consecutive touchdown drives. On3

  • It fits a troubling pattern: SMU gained 585 yards against FSU, and Alabama scored on nine straight possessions after falling behind 21-6. Virginia was the standout defensive performance between those games and Louisville. On3

  • Norvell’s answer: He said the Louisville performance was unacceptable and emphasized executing assignments and responding after a bad play or series. FSU had 10 sacks against Virginia and one against Louisville; Rylan Kennedy had that sack and leads the team with five this season. On3 | NoleGameday notes

Why It Matters: The Virginia and Louisville performances show two very different versions of this unit. FSU needs the first one to travel to Miami. 🍢🍢

📊 The Snap-Count Story 📊

FSU ran 80 offensive plays and defended 58 in Louisville. Noles247’s snap tracker shows how heavily the Seminoles leaned on their core even as the score moved away from them.

  • The offensive line never came off: Xavier Chaplin, André Otto, Bradyn Welch-Joiner, Paul Bowling and Nate Pabst each logged all 80 offensive snaps. Ashton Daniels and Duce Robinson played 79; Micahi Danzy played 77.

  • The backfield split: Ousmane Kromah played 55 snaps to Quintrevion Wisner’s 25. Kromah led FSU with 88 rushing yards. Freshman Jasen Lopez played just three offensive snaps, one of them the pivotal fourth-down screen.

  • Heavy work in the secondary: Ja’Bril Rawls played 57 of 58 defensive snaps, CJ Richard Jr. played 56 and Quindarrius Jones played 55. Up front, Daniel Lyons logged 48, Kevin Wynn 47 and Darryll Desir 14.

Why It Matters: FSU’s main contributors were on the field through the collapse. With Miami next, the snap chart sharpens the question of how that group will handle the next momentum swing. 🍢🍢

🗺️ Saturday’s Scouting Report 🗺️

FSU had Saturday off, but three teams still on its schedule did not. Tomahawk Nation’s scoreboard tracked a trio of losses for future opponents.

  • Florida fell 38-19 to South Carolina. The Gators remain FSU’s Black Friday opponent on November 27.

  • North Carolina beat Pitt 21-17. The Noles visit the Panthers on Friday, November 13.

  • Wake Forest beat NC State 38-14. The Wolfpack come to Tallahassee on November 21.

Miami and Clemson both had byes. FSU goes to Miami on October 17 at 7 p.m. on ESPN, then has an open weekend before hosting Clemson on October 31. FSU schedule

Why It Matters: Saturday’s results are a reminder that the remaining schedule can shift quickly. FSU’s immediate focus stays on its own road form before the Miami trip. 🍢🍢

🏐 Clemson Comes to Tully 🏐

Volleyball gives Seminole fans a home match today after Friday’s Georgia Tech contest was postponed. FSU hosts Clemson at 1 p.m. inside Tully Gymnasium, with the match on ACCNX. FSU preview

  • Home momentum: FSU has won four straight matches at Tully and nine of its last 10 sets. The Seminoles have taken 20 of their past 21 meetings with Clemson.

  • Players to watch: Kyleene Filimaua had 16 kills and 14 digs in Wednesday’s win over Jacksonville, her seventh double-double this season. Nenu Kpea added 13 kills on 19 attempts and two blocks.

  • The opponent: Clemson enters 6-11 overall and 0-5 in ACC play, per FSU’s preview.

Why It Matters: The Noles can keep their home streak moving and add an ACC win before a trip to Pitt on Friday. 🍢🍢

🏊 Strong Finish in the Pool 🏊

FSU closed its season-opening Seminole Fall Classic with 14 wins in 22 events on Saturday. The women beat Iowa State 391-284; the No. 23 men lost a tight meet to Purdue, 352.50-347.50. FSU results

  • Lucy Porter totaled four first-place finishes across the two days. After setting FSU’s women’s 100 IM record Friday, she won Saturday’s 500 free in 4:53.21 and posted a personal-best 1:58.22 in the 200 IM.

  • Logan Robinson won five individual events for the meet, adding Saturday victories in the 50 fly and 200 fly. FSU also credits him with a men’s 100 IM record Friday.

  • Evelyn Hall swept the women’s diving events with a Saturday win on three-meter. The Noles next compete in Atlanta at Georgia Tech’s Dual Meet Tournament on October 16-17.

Why It Matters: The women leave with a team win, both squads showed individual record speed, and the men finished just five points short of Purdue. 🍢🍢
