Weekend College Football Roundup: Seminoles Off, But Drama On

While the Florida State Seminoles took a well-deserved break this weekend, the college football world was anything but quiet. And for Seminoles fans, there was a particular result that might have brought a smirk to their faces.

Oh, how the mighty Gators have stumbled! The Kentucky Wildcats, perhaps feeling a touch of Seminole spirit with former FSU Defensive Coordinator Mark Stoops at the helm, delivered a delightful upset, trouncing the Florida Gators 33-14. This wasn't just any win; it marked Kentucky's third straight victory over Florida, a streak not seen since the 1950s. The star Wildcat of the day was Vandy transfer tailback Ray Davis, who dazzled with 280 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Gators' woes, especially on the road, continue to mount. Their away record is a dismal 1-13 since a 2021 defeat to, you guessed it, Kentucky.

On the west coast, the USC Trojans, led by the phenomenal Caleb Williams, showcased their offensive prowess. Williams, with six touchdowns and 403 passing yards, played a pivotal role in USC's narrow 48-41 victory over Colorado. However, while the Trojans' offense soared, their defense left much to be desired, allowing Colorado to rush for 193 yards. Under the guidance of Coach Prime, a Seminoles football legend, the Buffaloes almost staged a remarkable comeback, rallying from a 41-14 deficit in the 3rd quarter. As CU tallies up another loss, it's easier for us to admit: we still hold a special place for Prime. Whether or not he reciprocates, our garnet and gold loyalty doesn't waver.

Down in Texas, it seems Jimbo Fisher, our not-so-beloved former coach, might finally be getting a return on his Boosters’ investments. In their 34-22 triumph over Arkansas, the Aggies' front-7 recorded an impressive seven sacks. Players like Walter Nolan, Shemar Turner, and Shemar Stewart, all former 5-star recruits, put in strong performances. Maybe Jimbo's high-profile (and highly paid) recruiting classes are finally paying off. Who would've thought?

Seminoles Surge: A Mid-Season Analysis of Florida State Football

The Florida State Seminoles, under the leadership of Coach Mike Norvell, appear to be well on their way to returning as a true powerhouse in college football. As we approach the mid-season mark, the Seminoles remain undefeated, showcasing their prowess (albeit in fits and starts) on both offense and defense. This analysis delves into the key factors that have contributed to their stellar performance so far.

Offense:

  • Current Standing: No. 5 Florida State is 4-0 this season, with a bye week before facing Virginia Tech in October.

  • Quarterback Performance: Jordan Travis has surpassed 1,000 passing yards this season, with 10 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing touchdowns. He's been playing with a likely non-throwing shoulder injury for the last six quarters.

  • Receivers in Focus: Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman have been the primary targets, accounting for 50% of FSU's overall passing attack. Coleman leads with six receiving touchdowns, the highest in the nation.

  • Running Game: The Seminoles average 147.8 rushing yards per game. Trey Benson, the starting running back, averages 4.72 yards per carry. The team's reliance on Benson remains despite the running game's struggles.

  • Offensive Line: Jeremiah Byers, the offensive tackle, has faced challenges, especially against Clemson. The line has seen injuries, with Maurice Smith and Robert Scott Jr. missing games.

  • Kicking Game: Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald remains perfect this season, with 4-of-4 on field goal attempts and 23-of-23 on extra-point attempts.

Defense:

  • Defensive Coordinator Spotlight: Adam Fuller's strategies have been under scrutiny. FSU's defense ranks 94th in total defense, allowing 400.8 yards per game. However, their red zone defense stands strong at 24th in the nation.

  • Defensive Line: Investments were made in the offseason. The results are mixed, with 11 sacks in four games. The line's performance has been good but not dominant.

  • Linebackers: Kalen DeLoach, Tatum Bethune, and DJ Lundy have been the mainstays, with DeLoach making a significant play at Clemson. Depth remains a concern.

  • Takeaways: FSU has a turnover margin of 0.50, with five takeaways this season. Two of these takeaways resulted in scores.

  • Defensive End Spotlight: Jared Verse has been impactful despite not having standout stats. He's ranked as FSU's third-best defensive player this year.

  • Pressure Stats: When FSU pressures opposing quarterbacks, results are mixed. Of 37 pressures, 25 resulted in no gain, while the rest averaged 14 yards per play.

Overall: Coach Mike Norvell has certainly turned the team around, with FSU now seen as a legitimate College Football Playoff contender. However, improved and consistent performance, both offensively and defensively, will be crucial as they navigate the rest of the season.

Florida State Transfer Update: Treshaun Ward Shining at Kansas State

As the Florida State Seminoles enjoy their bye week, it's an opportune time to check in on some former players who departed via the transfer portal. While the team gained several impressive transfers this offseason, they also saw 19 players leave. Here's a look at how some of the notable former Seminoles are performing with their new teams:

Standout Performers:
