⚾ Fall Ball Recap: FSU Baseball's Exhibition Against Alabama ⚾

FSU baseball hosted Alabama in a fall exhibition on Saturday, splitting the games with Alabama winning the first (3-1) and FSU taking the second (5-1) over 15 innings. FSU’s pitching staff impressed, holding Alabama to just four runs across both games. Here’s a look at the highlights:

Game 1 (F/7: Bama 3, FSU 1)

  • Jamie Arnold: The left-hander struck out four over two perfect innings, showing off his new changeup alongside his slider and fastball (93-94 MPH).

  • Evan Chrest: Allowed three runs but showcased his slider and cutter, striking out two while recovering after a two-run homer.

  • Peyton Prescott: Dominated his inning with a fastball consistently at 97 MPH and added two strikeouts.

  • Maison Martinez: Kept Alabama scoreless in his frame, relying on his curveball to strand a runner.

  • Position Players: Chase Williams energized with his speed, legging out two infield singles and scoring on a hit from Alex Lodise.

Game 2 (F/8: FSU 5, Bama 1)

  • Wes Mendes: Rebounded after a leadoff homer to pitch a solid second inning with two strikeouts (93-96 MPH).

  • Joey Volini: Shined with five strikeouts over two innings, mixing his four-pitch repertoire effectively.

  • Payton Manca: Efficiently handled the seventh inning, using his heavy fastball and benefiting from a strong defensive back-pick from catcher Nathan Cmeyla.

  • Hudson Rowan: Closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning, capping his appearance with two strikeouts.

Key Offensive Contributions

  • Hunter Carns: Had a multi-hit game, including an impressive opposite-field homer in the final inning.

  • Cmeyla & Brody DeLamielleure: Each had multi-hit games, setting the tone for FSU’s offense.

  • Freshmen Standouts: Jace Estes added an RBI single, while Andrew Duncan ripped a two-out triple, and Gage Harrelson drew two walks and an RBI sac fly.

FSU wraps up fall play with the annual Garnet & Gold Game on November 1st, and fans can look forward to another exciting preview of this talented squad.

🏈 FSU Falls to No. 6 Miami in Rivalry Matchup 🏈

The Seminoles faced a tough 36-14 loss against the No. 6 Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night, ending FSU's three-game win streak in the series and highlighting struggles on both sides of the ball. Despite the relatively determined defensive effort, FSU’s offense couldn't keep pace with Miami's methodical scoring drives.

Game Highlights:

  • Slow Start: Miami set the tone early with a seven-play, 67-yard drive to open the game, taking a quick 7-0 lead. They extended their lead to 14-0 on their next drive, converting a challenging third-and-20 situation.

  • Freshman Spark: True freshman quarterback Luke Kromenhoek stepped in to replace starter Brock Glenn, delivering FSU’s first touchdown drive with 69 rushing yards, including a fourth-and-1, 42-yard run. Caziah Holmes punched it in from a yard out to bring the Seminoles within a touchdown.

  • Offensive Struggles: FSU's offense faced difficulties in execution, managing only 248 total yards and converting just 4-of-16 on third and fourth downs. Kromenhoek led FSU’s offense for most of the game, finishing with 61 passing yards and adding 71 yards on the ground.

Miami’s Methodical Approach

  • Cam Ward’s Control: The Heisman contender had a quieter game, recording 208 passing yards but adding a receiving touchdown in the fourth quarter that helped Miami pull away.

  • Rushing Attack: Miami’s Damien Martinez and Mark Fletcher combined for 219 rushing yards and two touchdowns, allowing Miami to control the clock and wear down FSU’s defense.

  • Conversions Key: Miami excelled in clutch situations, converting 11-of-17 on third and fourth downs, while FSU struggled in comparison with only a 25% conversion rate.

With the loss, FSU falls to 1-7 (1-6 ACC) and returns to Doak Campbell Stadium next week to face North Carolina.

🔮 Quarterback Dilemma: FSU’s Future Under Center 🔮

As Florida State’s challenging 2024 season winds down, the big question looms: who will lead the Seminoles at quarterback in 2025? FSU’s ongoing quarterback carousel, featuring redshirt freshman Brock Glenn and true freshman Luke Kromenhoek, continued in their 36-14 loss to No. 6 Miami, showing potential yet leaving no clear frontrunner.

Game Recap

  • Strategic Switch: Head Coach Mike Norvell followed a pre-game plan to bring in Kromenhoek on the third series, after Glenn's first two drives netted 24 yards and no points.

  • Kromenhoek's Impact: Kromenhoek energized the offense with a 12-play, 78-yard drive, capped by a Caziah Holmes touchdown. He showed poise and mobility, rushing for 69 yards on the drive, including a 42-yard sneak to convert on fourth down.

  • Final Quarter Adjustments: Norvell went back to Glenn in the fourth quarter to run a faster-paced offense. Glenn closed the game with a 75-yard, 12-play touchdown drive, connecting with Malik Benson for the Seminoles' final score.

The Road Ahead
FSU's quarterback decision is critical for both the immediate and long-term trajectory of the program. The dilemma: commit to one quarterback and risk losing the other to the transfer portal, or continue rotating the two, risking both quarterbacks’ future with FSU.

Norvell expressed confidence in both players’ potential and mutual support but remains noncommittal about the QB approach moving forward. "We'll continue to evaluate…whether it’s playing with two guys or deciding if one is head and shoulders above," he said.

As FSU prepares to face North Carolina at home next Saturday, the quarterback situation will remain a focal point as the coaching staff navigates this delicate balancing act.
