If it storms, who does it help?
🏹 Welcome to The Chief Brief! 🏹
Good morning, Seminole!
One more sleep until Virginia. The predictions are in (spoiler: the beat writers aren’t feeling it), a thunderstorm might crash the 3:30 kickoff, and Virginia’s cornerbacks have been told they’ll have to “face the giant.” Off the field, CBS Sports dropped a hot seat story with a name in it FSU fans will recognize, and the program lost a legend this week.
Here’s what’s on deck this morning.

🗞️ Around the Noles 🗞️ - Volleyball, tennis, softball’s budget and Jameis
Let's dive in. 🍢
Make Saturday look like this.
A flag on the porch. A flag at the tailgate. Garnet and gold wherever you watch. Desert Cactus makes officially licensed FSU flags in multiple designs, so your Saturday setup can look the part.
Thursday’s availability report brought mostly good news for FSU, one late scratch, and a forecast that could make Saturday interesting before anyone even snaps the ball.
📋 The Report
Linebacker Noah LaVallee was added to FSU’s out list, bringing the total to 11. Quindarrius Jones and Caleb LaVallee remain probable.
The good part: Ashlynd Barker, Chris Jones, K.J. Kirkland, Donny Hiebert and TE Xavier Tiller were all removed from the report entirely, so they’re good to go.
Warchant reports Darryll Desir is believed to be dealing with an illness, and freshmen Izayia Williams and Daylen Green are lost for the year.
Virginia’s list got longer. RB Peyton Lewis and OL Grant Ellinger moved from questionable to out, and DE Devon Baxter is doubtful. With DT Jason Hammond already out, ChopChat argues the obvious plan is to lean on Ousmane Kromah and Tre Wisner against a thinned-out front.
Per ChopChat, there’s a 65% chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a storm expected to move through around 3 p.m. That could push back the 3:30 kickoff.
TV: ESPN2, with Jay Alter, Tom Luginbill and Lauren Sisler. Odds: FanDuel has Virginia -2.5 (FSU +122 on the moneyline), with a total of 51.5.
Why It Matters: A wet field and a possible delay favor the team that wants to hand the ball off 44 times, and that’s Virginia. Having the safeties and Chris Jones fully cleared is exactly the kind of help a run defense needs on a sloppy day. 🍢
🔮 The Predictions Are In 🔮
The people who cover this team every day have made their picks. Across the Noles247 and Warchant staffs, it’s Virginia 10, FSU 4.
Trey Rowland (Virginia 34-27) summed up the matchup as Virginia’s run game against “FSU’s 1200 thread count soft run defense.” His deciding factor: which quarterback plays cleaner.
Chris Nee (Virginia 31-28) sees openings: a heavy Kromah workload, Duce in one-on-ones, and UVA safety Ethan Minter as “a player that can be attacked on the seam.”
Kevin Little (Virginia 38-31) wasn’t impressed by UVA’s win over NC State: “my middle school flag football team could look good against a Dave Doeren offense.”
The believers: Adam Brown (FSU 34-27) and Kolby Crawford (FSU 27-23), who went with vibes. “Slang that thing, Ashton.”
Ira Schoffel (FSU 28-27) and Matt LaSerre (FSU 28-24) are the lone FSU picks. Gene Williams has the boldest call at Virginia 45-27. NoleGameday picked Virginia 31-23.
Warchant’s matchup grades give Virginia the edge in both run-vs-run and pass-vs-pass defense, call FSU’s passing game vs. UVA’s secondary even, and give FSU the advantage on the ground and on special teams, where Gabe Panikowski is a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals and Virginia’s Will Bettridge has missed twice from inside 40.
Why It Matters: Nearly everyone has this as a one-score game, and nearly everyone thinks the possession battle decides it. The underdog role isn’t a bad thing in front of a home crowd. 🍢
Virginia’s secondary has been the best in the country at shutting down passing games. Opponents are completing just 47.6% of their throws, with two touchdowns and six interceptions. This week, their scouting report starts with one 6-foot-6 problem.
🗣️ The Duce Plan
Virginia’s defensive backs coach had Donavon Platt, who covered Duce Robinson last year, brief the room on him. Platt: “He has good speed. It can be deceptive at times because he is a long strider… just not being lulled to sleep.”
Corner Omillio Agard: “He moves like he’s smaller. He uses his body well. He’s good at back shoulders, and he can take the top off as well.”
DC John Rudzinski, on Agard’s assignment: “This week he’s going to face somebody that’s giant. He’s going to face the giant. He’s got to find a way.”
♟️ The Chess Match
Per Wahoos247’s Jacquie Franciulli, Virginia plays man coverage at the 13th-highest rate in the country and ranks eighth in pressure rate while blitzing rarely. She expects Rudzinski to give his corners some help on Duce without abandoning man.
Agard also noticed FSU’s depth: “I’m going to have to guard Danzy a little bit different than I’m going to have to guard Duce, and I’m going to have to guard 15 a little bit different.” On Ashton Daniels: “He can roll out and throw a 50-yard, 60-yard bomb.”
Why It Matters: Man coverage means one-on-ones, and that’s exactly what Norvell has been preaching all week. If Duce, Boggs and Danzy win a few of them, that No. 1 pass defense ranking gets tested for real. 🍢
This Glass Survived a Cockatoo. Your Tailgate Doesn't Stand a Chance.
We did not expect a bird to sell us on drinkware but watch the clip. A cockatoo grabs one of Rowdy Crowd's glasses, it drops onto a hardwood deck… and it bounces. No crack, no shards, no cleanup.
That is the whole idea. Rowdy Crowd's wine tumblers, champagne flutes, beer schooners, and gin balloons are made from unbreakable US Tritan, so they look and feel like real glass but shrug off the drop your cooler lid is about to take. For a Saturday in the lot, that matters more than it should.
Set your tailgate up with cups that make it to the fourth quarter.
CBS Sports took a deep look at Mike Norvell’s situation this week, and the story went beyond wins and losses.
💵 The Money
CBS puts Norvell’s buyout at $46.7 million.
The bigger number: CBS estimates FSU’s roster budget at $23 million to $30 million, roughly half of Miami’s, which it places in the upper $40 millions. It reports the department underestimated rival spending and overestimated NCAA enforcement.
After the firing of AD Michael Alford, CBS says board of trustees chairman Peter Collins has become more involved in athletics decisions.
👀 The Jimbo Whisper
According to CBS, former players have been lobbying FSU officials on behalf of Jimbo Fisher, with the pitch that he’d take less than the $10 million-plus market rate and free up money for assistants and the roster.
CBS also stressed that Norvell’s fate isn’t a foregone conclusion, and that the next few weeks will shape it. CBS’ coaching hot seat list has him “heating up.”
🎙️ Kanell Weighs In
Former FSU QB Danny Kanell told The Osceola these are among “the worst vibes since I’ve been here as a player,” and that coaching every week thinking “if I don’t win this game, I’m gonna get fired” affects the players too. He still thinks eight wins should be the expectation.
Why It Matters: The roster budget gap is the part of this story that outlasts any one coach. Whoever is on the sideline in 2027, FSU has to decide whether it’s willing to spend like Miami. 🍢
FSU has more than 30 recruits expected in Doak on Saturday, per 247Sports’ running visitor list. A win in front of this crowd would go a long way.
🤝 Commits in the House
2027 commits expected include Top247 WR Sean Green, S Za’Kari Johnson, WR Majay Thompson, edge Anthony Cavallaro and S Jemari Foreman. Warchant says blue-chip safety Ta’Shawn Poole will be there too.
ChopChat flagged three commits it considers at risk: Johnson, Georgia safety Jernard Albright (who already flipped once, from South Carolina) and four-star DL Sam LeJeune, who it says would “likely be one of the first commitments to go” if Norvell leaves.
🎯 Flip Targets and 2028 Names
FSU will host Georgia Tech TE commit Joshua Pettigrew, Pitt TE commit DeShaun Thomas and Syracuse OT commit Omari Lawson. That’s two tight ends, days after Connor Winn left FSU with none in the class.
Tampa Top247 DL Zylen Little (40 tackles, 28 TFL, 8.5 sacks in six games) says he and Norvell “text almost every day.” On FSU: “I like the history of the program. It’s nothing else like it.”
🏀 Hoops Corner
Top-30 2027 forward Ahmed Nur (6-9) named FSU in his top four after a visit, citing Luke Loucks’ “NBA-style system.” His review of Tallahassee: “It’s a party town, so there’s not a lot to hate about it.”
Why It Matters: Recruits can hear the noise outside the program as well as anyone. What they see in the stadium on Saturday will carry more weight than anything a coach says to them. 🍢

FSU baseball held its fifth intrasquad scrimmage of the fall on Thursday, and 247Sports’ Brett Nevitt got his first look at Link Jarrett’s new club.
🔥 On the Mound
Penn State transfer Isaiah Shayter sat at 95-96 mph and never dipped below 94.
John Abraham (1.91 ERA in 47 innings last year) is trying to win a weekend rotation spot. He struck out two over two innings and got four of his five whiffs on breaking balls.
Cade O’Leary retired five of his last six batters, and lefty Kevin Mebil got four groundouts with a sharper slider than last year.
💥 At the Plate
Sophomore John Stuetzer had two at-bats with two 109-mph exit velocities, including a 393-foot homer to center.
Pitt transfer AJ Nessler went 3-for-3 leading off, and freshman SS Deacon Avery, who followed his coach from Coastal Carolina, smoked a 106-mph single. Nevitt thinks Avery “could be an instant impact freshman bat.”
Nice comeback story: Blaydon Plain, who missed all of 2025 with an injury and briefly left baseball, is back and batted cleanup.
Why It Matters: It’s October, but the early returns are encouraging, and Shayter’s velocity alone will make people take notice. The first real test is the fall game vs. Auburn in Pensacola on Oct. 10. 🍢
FSU Hall of Famer Otto Petty died Monday at 76.
Adolph Rupp told the 5-foot-7 Louisville native he was too short to play for Kentucky. Petty came to Tallahassee with teammate Ron King instead and helped lead FSU to the 1972 national championship game, which it lost to UCLA 81-76.
Along the way, FSU beat Rupp’s Kentucky by 20, with Petty scoring 13 and going 9-for-9 from the line. Per The Osceola, he broke North Carolina’s full-court press nearly by himself in the semifinal.
His 602 career assists stood as the school record for 21 years, until Charlie Ward broke it.
A Tully Gym legend known for behind-the-back and between-the-legs passes, Petty helped make FSU basketball matter nationally. Rest easy, Otto. 🍢
🗞️ Around the Noles 🗞️
FSU (6-6, 1-1 ACC) opens a five-match homestand tonight at 6 p.m. vs. NC State, then hosts Wake Forest Sunday at 1 p.m. (both on ACCNX). The Noles have won 19 straight against Wake. Senior Kyleene Filimaua leads the team with 186 kills and 22 aces.
Men’s tennis plays the Bedford Cup at UCF through Sunday with Elias Sumann, Yan Kodjoed, Justin Lyons and Oren Ezerzer, who reached the singles semifinals there last year.
The Osceola reports FSU softball spent $3.79 million in 2025, 15th nationally. Clemson is the only ACC program that spent more. SEC schools hold four of the top five spots.
With the Giants adding J.J. McCarthy, Jameis Winston made his status clear: “You keep saying backup… I’m the starter.” He has also embraced mentoring McCarthy.
Why It Matters: Volleyball has owned Wake Forest for nearly two decades, so Sunday is a nice chance to pad a streak before the football Noles get back to work. 🍢
And that’s a wrap!
