FSU's Ground Game: A Work in Progress
Florida State's ground attack has been a rollercoaster this season. While the Seminoles dazzled with 314 rushing yards and four touchdowns against Southern Miss, they hit a wall against Clemson, managing just 22 yards. Trey Benson was the lone bright spot, contributing 25 yards, but mainstays like Rodney Hill and Lawrance Toafili found little room to maneuver.
The numbers tell a story: FSU's rushing offense ranks 74th nationally, averaging 147.8 yards per game. This is a stark contrast to their passing game, which ranks among the top 20 in the nation. The disparity is evident, and it's clear where the Seminoles need to focus their efforts.
Head coach Mike Norvell and offensive coordinator Alex Atkins are well aware of the challenge. While they credit Clemson's formidable defense, they also acknowledged missed opportunities. Atkins remains optimistic, believing that a deep dive into past performances can help the team recalibrate and they’ve gotten that opportunity this past bye week.
The next hurdle is Virginia Tech. The Hokies recently held Pitt to a paltry 38 rushing yards. Despite their overall defensive ranking of 107th in the FBS, they've showcased their ability to stifle strong rushing teams. Atkins commended the Hokies for their fundamental tackling and knack for disrupting offensive lines.
As the Seminoles gear up for their clash with Virginia Tech, all eyes will be on their ground game. The bye week offered a chance to regroup, and fans are eager to see if the Seminoles can find their stride on the ground once more.
Alex Mastromanno: A Punting Prodigy on Track for a Record-Setting Season
Florida State's Alex Mastromanno isn't just any punter; he's on track to etch his name into the Seminoles' record books. The Australian-born punter, in just his third season with FSU, is averaging an impressive 47.2 yards per punt, which, if maintained, would surpass the current school record set by Rohn Stark in 1981.
Mastromanno's prowess isn't limited to just distance. He's demonstrated remarkable precision, pinning opponents inside their 20-yard line 16 times this season. This skill has been instrumental in the field position battle, giving FSU's defense a significant advantage.
His journey from Melbourne, Australia, to Tallahassee is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport. Before joining FSU, Mastromanno was a standout at ProKick Australia, an academy renowned for producing elite punters for American football. His transition to the American game has been seamless, and his impact on the field undeniable.
FSU's special teams coach, John Papuchis, has been effusive in his praise for Mastromanno, highlighting his consistency and work ethic. According to Papuchis, Mastromanno's ability to handle pressure and deliver under challenging conditions sets him apart.
As the Seminoles navigate the remainder of the season, Mastromanno's contributions will be crucial. With each punt, he's not only pushing the opposition back but also inching closer to a historic milestone. Fun fact: he was also the first player to commit to Mike Norvell.
Seminole Volleyball Continues ACC Dominance
The Florida State Women's Volleyball team is getting it done in the ACC, and their latest victory over the Miami Hurricanes is a testament to their prowess. Pushing their ACC record to an unblemished 5-0, the Seminoles showcased skill, determination, and teamwork.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, stretching to a full five sets. While both teams displayed exceptional talent, it was the Seminoles who clinched the match with a 15-11 win in the final set. Standout performances from players like Morgan Chacon, who delivered crucial kills, and Lily Tessier, with her impeccable setting, were instrumental in this victory. Taryn Knuth also made her presence felt with several blocks, ensuring the Hurricanes had a tough time scoring.
This win not only cements FSU's top position in the ACC standings but also highlights the depth and versatility of their squad. As they gear up to face the Louisville Cardinals on October 6th, the Seminoles will be looking to continue their dominant run and make a strong statement in the conference.
