Do you like FSU playing on Friday nights?
🏹 Welcome to The Chief Brief! 🏹
Good morning, Seminole!
One more sleep until Friday night in Louisville, and nobody seems to believe in the Noles yet. Every Noles247 staffer picked the Cardinals, and the line has drifted further toward Louisville. Meanwhile, a tropical storm knocked two FSU events off the weekend schedule, and Luke Loucks got loose at ACC Tipoff.
Here’s what’s on deck.

🔮 Everybody’s Picking Louisville 🔮
If you’re looking for outside believers, keep looking. FSU (3-2) is the underdog at Louisville (2-3) Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
All six Noles247 staffers picked Louisville: John Evans and Chris Nee 34-31, Trey Rowland 35-27, Adam Brown 30-24, Kolby Crawford 38-30 and Kevin Little 35-31.
Evans’ worry is Louisville DE Clev Lubin. If he were the Cardinals, he’d line Lubin up over “an out-of-position Nate Pabst early and often” and let a pass rush ranked 10th nationally in pressure rate get after Daniels.
Little summed up the gut check: Louisville has lost two close games it probably thought it would win, “but FSU hasn’t won a road game in literally years.”
📊 The Numbers Disagree a Little
The line has moved. FSU opened +3.5, and On3’s Andy Staples notes the market now has Louisville by 5.5.
ESPN’s FPI, though, has FSU No. 30 nationally and third in the ACC. Louisville is No. 36.
CBS Sports’ QB Power Rankings finally noticed Daniels, who debuted at No. 47. Kienholz is No. 22, and Miami’s Darian Mensah is No. 1.
Why It Matters: Nobody expects FSU to win, which is about the best setup a team trying to prove itself could ask for. 🍢🍢
247Sports’ Louisville affiliate, Cardinal Authority, ran a “stock report” on the Cards. Here’s what FSU fans should know.
Buy: The receivers. Tre Richardson and former Nole Lawayne McCoy are both top-10 in the ACC in receiving yards, and McCoy’s 20.1 yards per catch ranks second in the league.
Hold: The kicker. First-year starter Carson Hilbert is 6-for-7 on field goals and 5-of-6 from 40+, with a career-long 54-yarder.
Sell: The defensive line. Lubin has 3.5 of the team’s eight sacks, which rank just 14th in the ACC. Louisville also allows 156.2 rushing yards per game.
Watch: The offensive line. Injuries have forced captain Lance Robinson to bounce between center and tackle, and the Cards have allowed 10 sacks, fifth-most in the ACC. They did run for 231 yards at NC State.
Wednesday’s update brought no changes for FSU, so DE Darryll Desir remains questionable. The only Louisville change: DB TJ Banks was removed from the report. RB Keyjuan Brown is still questionable. The next updates come tonight and about two hours before kickoff.
Why It Matters: Louisville has the receivers to stress FSU’s secondary, but its offensive line is banged up. That’s a matchup FSU’s pass rush should be licking its chops over. 🍢🍢
Remember the 2025 red zone nightmares? The 2026 offense has made them go away. Warchant’s Ira Schoffel broke down the turnaround.
Last year: FSU ranked 95th nationally, scoring on just 56 of 67 trips (80.7%). Eight of the 11 empty trips came in losses.
This year: FSU is 21-for-21 with 17 touchdowns. It’s one of just 11 perfect teams nationally, and only Alabama (26 trips) has been perfect on more chances.
It started in January. Micahi Danzy: “The first thing Coach Harris said when we came in, he said we’re struggling in the red zone and we’re going to get better at it. And we took that personal.”
Kicking helps too. Oklahoma State transfer Gabe Panikowski is 6-for-6 on field goals, after former Nole Jake Weinberg went 12-for-19 last fall. But Norvell wants touchdowns: “When we get down there, we want points on the board, and specifically we want six.”
Schoffel also profiled ACC lineman of the week André Otto, who looked at risk of losing his starting spot in camp. The Key West senior now has the line’s second-best PFF grade (68.3), just behind center Bradyn Welch-Joiner (69.3). He’s the only starting lineman who has been at FSU his whole career.
Tim Harris Jr.: “Otto is a great human being, number one… He shows up to work on the days that they may not have to be in the building.”
Why It Matters: In a game the experts think will be decided by a field goal or less, red zone efficiency could decide it. 🍢🍢
Better Than Glass, Where Glass Isn't Allowed.
Beach, boat, pool deck, campsite. The places you most want a nice drink are usually the places real glass is a bad idea. Rowdy Crowd solves that. It looks and feels like glass, but it is unbreakable Tritan, so it goes where glass can't.
There is a sustainability angle too. One reusable set replaces a season of disposable cups, and Rowdy Crowd puts real work into their footprint, down to restoring farmland. Better for your sand and your conscience.
From the tailgate to the sandbar, one set does it all.
Love them or hate them, Friday nights are FSU’s new normal. The Osceola’s Bob Ferrante reports Louisville is the first of three Friday games on the 2026 schedule.
The slate: at Louisville this Friday, at Pitt on Nov. 13, and Florida on Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving.
Norvell sees both sides: “It’s a great showcase.” But also: “I don’t love the road, short week games… To do it three times in a year is a lot.”
This week was a crash course. After beating Virginia, FSU held a corrections meeting and lifted Sunday, then practiced Monday instead of taking its usual off day.
The ACC has a league-record 15 Friday games this fall, and the eyeballs follow. FSU’s Friday home game against Virginia last season drew 4.39 million viewers, ESPN’s most-watched Friday game in nearly three decades. Commissioner Jim Phillips: “There’s so much compression on Saturday.”
Why It Matters: FSU gets a national spotlight with little competition for viewers. A win in front of that audience would go a long way. 🍢🍢
Two stories this week took the temperature of the fan base, and the reading isn’t warm.
☎️ The Hotline
On3’s Andy Staples asked FSU fans to call in after the Virginia win and say whether it changed how they feel about Norvell. Most said no. One caller: “I don’t care if he wins every game this year… It is over. We have moved on.”
Staples’ numbers: FSU is 10-20 since the 13-0 season in 2023 and 0-10 on the road since beating Florida on Nov. 25, 2023. Norvell would be owed about $47 million if fired, paid in installments and offset by future earnings.
He also asked the counter question: if FSU heads to Pitt in November at 6-3, does the tone change? “Or would it still be too late?”
🏟️ The Empty Seats
NoleGameday’s Tommy Mire reports FSU is averaging 62,270 fans at home, down 7% from 66,815 a year ago, per Iron Football Stats. Doak holds 67,277.
The Virginia game drew 55,782, the smallest reported crowd of the season. Opponents play a part, since last year’s early home slate included Alabama and Miami, and so does the stadium renovation, which still divides some longtime season ticket holders.
Why It Matters: Winning is the one thing that fixes all of it. A road win Friday would be the first real test of whether the mood can still change. 🍢🍢

🏀 Loucks Unplugged 🏀
Luke Loucks had plenty to say at ACC Tipoff, including a one-on-one with NoleGameday’s Austin Veazey.
🎤 The Pitch
On recruiting: “If we don’t think you can eventually play in the NBA, Florida State’s probably not the place for you.”
On style: “I want to play fast because fast is usually efficient.” He admitted last year’s team was “out of control” in transition and called offensive rebounding “one of our core identities.”
He’s trying Cincinnati transfer and former McDonald’s All-American Shon Abaev at point guard. Freshman Brandon Bass Jr.’s “catch-and-shoot ability is second to none.”
⭐ The X-Factor
Per 247Sports, Loucks said UNC Asheville transfer Kam Taylor has “really blown me away.” Taylor led the Big South at 18.9 points per game last year, and Loucks says he “not only could, but should play in the NBA someday.”
🌀 Storm Scratch
Saturday’s Southern Tip-Off exhibition against Mississippi State in Pensacola was canceled because of Tropical Storm Isaias, which is expected to make landfall as a hurricane late Friday or early Saturday. Organizers are looking at rescheduling. Next up: Auburn in Birmingham on Oct. 14, then LSU at the Tucker Center on Oct. 24.
Why It Matters: Loucks is recruiting on NBA upside and planning to play fast. The real test is Nov. 2 against Florida A&M in Tampa. 🍢🍢
🗞️ Around the Noles 🗞️
Isaias also wiped out Saturday’s fall exhibition against Auburn at Pensacola’s Blue Wahoos Stadium. The Noles will now open fall play at home against Jacksonville on Friday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m.
FSU (9-6, 3-1 ACC) beat Jacksonville 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23) for its fourth straight home win. Kyleene Filimaua posted 16 kills and 14 digs, and Bailey Higgins notched her first career double-double (11 kills, career-high 15 digs). Nenu Kpea hit a career-best .684.
Next: Georgia Tech on Friday at 7 p.m. (ACCNX) and Clemson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Women’s tennis is at the ITA Southeast Regional through Tuesday, led by No. 94 JoAnna Kennedy in the main singles draw.
247Sports profiled Iowa Western JUCO cornerback Coaleon Johnson, who spent two years working at Amazon and Walmart before returning to football. Now the 6-foot-3 corner has 26 offers, including FSU, and an official visit set for the Nov. 27 Florida game.
Why It Matters: The storm takes a couple of events off the board, but volleyball keeps rolling into a big ACC weekend. 🍢🍢
And that’s a wrap!
Thanks for riding with us today, Seminole!
To everyone in the Panhandle, stay safe and keep an eye on Isaias this weekend. We’ll have your full game-day preview tomorrow. See you then.
Go Noles,
