Alabama ranks sixth nationally in total defense (185.5 yards per game), fourth in rushing defense (32.5 yards per game), and first in third-down defense, where opponents are just 1 for 23. Against Kentucky, the Crimson Tide recorded four sacks and six tackles for loss in the second half alone.

Norvell didn't hedge on the challenge Wednesday. "They're fast, they're explosive, they've increased their size from what last year's defensive front was to this year," he said. "You could see their confidence in the defensive backfield. They've been able to play a lot of man coverage."

Warchant's matchup breakdown gives Alabama the clear edge in three of five categories: Alabama passing versus FSU pass defense, FSU passing versus Alabama pass defense, and FSU rushing versus Alabama's rush defense, which ranks third nationally at 27 yards allowed per game. Run defense and special teams were called even.

The clearest bright spot: FSU's own run defense limited New Mexico State to 47 yards on 23 carries, even if SMU exposed it for 5 yards a carry two weeks later.

Is Ashton Daniels really the answer at quarterback? He's 6-21 as a starter and completing just 58 percent of his passes this season, though he did throw for 259 yards and rush for 108 against this same Alabama defense last year as Auburn's quarterback.

Can the secondary fix its communication problems after getting torched for 430 yards by SMU, and can Florida State's line finally settle on a workable combination up front against a defensive front that already has 7 sacks?

FSU has run the ball far more than it's passed through two games (39 runs to 27 passes against New Mexico State, 45 to 23 against SMU), and one Warchant analysis argues that's backward against a defense this good against the run. The suggestion: make Keelon Russell win the game with his arm by daring Alabama to load the box, and lean on punter Daniel Hughes (45.4 yards per punt, ninth nationally) rather than gambling on fourth downs.

An Alabama insider's read backs up where the opening might be. A Roll 'Bama Roll analyst called the Crimson Tide's defensive line and edge rush "the most tenuous" position group on the roster, the one area still unproven against real competition.

Between Warchant's eight writers, NoleGameday's five, and Tomahawk Nation's twelve, roughly 25 predictions came in this week, and all but one had Alabama winning, several by 30 or more points. Warchant's staff averaged out to roughly Alabama by 30, and Tomahawk Nation's consensus settled on Alabama 5-0 with a range from a 6-point game to a 31-point blowout.

The context behind the number: Alabama has won 26 of its last 30 rematches against teams that beat it since 2007, and the Tide have won 89 straight home games against unranked opponents, a streak that dates to a 2007 loss to Louisiana-Monroe.

Tomahawk Nation's Frank DeNole was the only writer across all three sites to pick FSU, calling for a 27-24 win built on effort and heart, the same call he made before last year's actual upset. Nobody else in the group is willing to make that bet twice.

The Athletic reported that FSU leadership is exploring a potential reunion with former head coach Jimbo Fisher, who went 83-23 in eight seasons in Tallahassee and won the 2013 national championship, and that Fisher himself "really wants" the job. One source told the outlet, "Jimbo's rosters didn't stink. His ability to adapt to modern football is what caught up with him."

ESPN's Paul Finebaum went further Friday, saying he doesn't think Norvell survives a bad loss. "I don't think he gets on the plane to go back to Tallahassee," Finebaum said. "They hate Mike Norvell so badly this week, they fired his boss." Desmond Howard echoed the stakes, comparing Norvell's need for a win to what Steve Sarkisian faced against Ohio State last week.

Not everyone is on board. One counterargument points to Fisher's academic record as a red flag: FSU's multi-year Academic Progress Rate hit a school-record 993 under Norvell, while Fisher left the program at a then-FBS-worst 936 in 2017, and his final years at Texas A&M produced the lowest APR of any Aggies team from 2020 to 2024.

The bigger concern is NIL fluency. Fisher recorded just 18 transfer portal commitments in his final four seasons at Texas A&M without having to spend heavily to keep them, a very different skill set than what today's revenue-sharing, transfer-heavy rosters require.

FSU released a statement thanking Florida Senators Ashley Moody and Rick Scott "for working to address the bill's provisions related to conference realignment," saying their leadership is "helping protect the ability of our Florida universities to compete." FSU Board of Trustees chairman Peter Collins had criticized the bill's original 19-team conference cap and five-year independence requirement at an August board meeting, thanking both senators by name at the time.

The Senate's updated text drops that independence requirement from five years to three, and eliminates it entirely six years after the bill takes effect, timing that lines up closely with FSU's own reduced ACC exit fee, which drops to a flat $75 million by 2030 under the settlement from FSU's 2023 lawsuit against the conference.

FSU (5-5) fell 3-1 to No. 10 Florida (8-1) at Tully Gymnasium, tying the two teams at 58 kills and 61 digs apiece despite the loss. Senior Kyleene Filimaua posted her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs, and freshman Sofia Moss added her third with 11 kills and 11 digs.

The men scored 26 points behind junior Hudson Betts, who took third in his first top-three finish as a Seminole, and the women scored just 17 points behind Rylee Blade's win and a runner-up finish from Bieke Schipperen, sweeping the top three spots. Both teams head to the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Missouri, on Sept. 25.

FSU men's basketball opens preseason practice Monday with a new Noah Basketball shooting system in its training facility, a donor-funded addition head coach Luke Loucks used previously with the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings. The system tracks arc, depth, and left-right deviation on every shot in real time.

Bills receiver Keon Coleman caught all six of his targets for 63 yards in Buffalo's 41-31 win over Detroit on Thursday night. A full slate of FSU alumni are in action across Sunday's games, including Jalen Ramsey and Asante Samuel Jr. at New England, Jared Verse at Tampa Bay, and Derwin James Jr. hosting the Raiders.

FSU (4-1-2, No. 21) welcomed 16 new players this season, including 11 transfers, and has leaned on older transfers to take on leadership roles early. "So, globally, I think our leadership is a work in progress," Pensky said. The Seminoles have battled back from behind twice in ties, most recently a 2-2 draw with NC State.

Communication has been a specific focus. "We got a lot of nice kids on our team who are a little bit quiet," Pensky said, adding he's asked the group to be louder on the field. Goalkeeper Kate Ockene, fresh off ACC Goalkeeper of the Week honors, has anchored the back line with 20 saves through seven games.
